Day 1 - Workshop Description and Objectives
(Classroom with case studies and hands on exercises)

Most companies embarking on a lean journey soon become frustrated with improvement events and isolated projects that yield great short-term results but have no sustainability and no major innovation. They are searching for something more: the culture that goes beyond "just managing" continuous improvement. Success in today's world of constant change and chaos requires leadership to leverage this uncertainty. It does no good to improve your path if you need to actually change the path you're on.

In this program Mike will address the top factors that will take you "Beyond Lean" and out of the Improvement Trap. Seating is limited to 100.

Days 2 & 3 -  "Hands on" Implementation Workshop*

Limited to 30 attendees, *must also attend March 31st workshop to participate in this part of the workshop.

As a continuation of Day 1,  this event gives participants a chance to practice strategy deployment and setting up the Daily Management Development System in the context of an actual organization's circumstances.  Days 2 & 3 are hosted by Mercy Medical Center Sioux City.  Participants will learn by helping Mercy Medical Center address a specific issue.

Who Should Attend: CEO, President, Vice-Presidents, Executive Leaders, General Managers, Lean Leaders, and anyone facilitating change within your organization who understands the importance of going beyond tools to creating effective management systems and processes in order to set the basis for creating a sustainable lean culture.

By Gina Singer CI Manager, Pella Corporation & ILC Board Member and Event Team Leader

Pella Corporation is an innovative leader in creating a better view for homes and businesses by designing, testing, manufacturing and installing quality windows and doors for new construction, remodeling and replacement applications.

As a family-owned and professionally managed privately-held company,
Pella is known for its 89-year history of innovation, making outstanding products, providing quality service and delivering on customer satisfaction. Headquartered in Pella, Iowa, the company is committed to incorporating new technologies, increasing productivity and practicing environmental stewardship.

Pella Corporation introduced continuous improvement processes, including Kaizen, in 1993. Since that time, Pella Corporation has conducted more than 10,500 Kaizen events and involved more than 71,500 team members, inside and outside the company, in its continuous improvement initiatives.

In the early days, continuous improvement was predominately a manufacturing tool and the main methods for implementing change were Kaizen Breakthrough events.  Week long, cross functional activities leveraging the principles of the Toyota Production System to drive waste and take time out of our processes.  Today, continuous improvement principles are used across the organization to drive improvements to Sales, Human Resources, IT, Finance, Marketing, Customer Service and Manufacturing processes leveraging not only week-long Kaizen events, but daily problem solving methodologies.

For any organization that is just starting to think about embarking on a lean journey, the best advice I could have for you is get started.  You could spend a lot of time attending conferences, reading books and benchmarking other organizations -- all those things are important, but you will only truly learn the principles by implementing them yourself.

Pella Corporation sees the Iowa Lean Consortium as a great place to send our new team members and seasoned continuous improvement professionals to sharpen their tool kit and develop a network of contacts all faced with similar challenges.
