ILC Feature Organization

Pizza Ranch, Inc. is the franchisor of a buffet-style restaurant serving pizza, the country’s best Pizza Ranch Logochicken, and a plentiful salad bar.  The concept was founded in 1981 in Hull, IA by Adrie Groeneweg.  Today there are over 190 restaurants in 13 Midwestern states owned by +100 franchised business owners.  The company’s headquarters are located at the Restaurant Support Center in Orange City, IA.

The Pizza Ranch lean journey started in 2013, when leaders in the company were introduced to K&N Management and Pal’s Sudden Service; the only two restaurant companies to win the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award.  After benchmarking these two organizations, eyes were opened and Pizza Ranch started a journey towards excellence.  In 2014, Pizza Ranch, Inc. introduced a ‘Culture of Excellence’ to the franchisee community at the annual Summer Meeting, which began their first excellence initiative. Pizza Ranch is still in the infancy phase of continuous improvement and looking back even over a very brief amount of time it is already apparent the culture is changing and processes are improving.  Culture of Excellence or a Lean Journey is the right approach to take Pizza Ranch from Good to Great!

As a franchised business, we could not force our franchisees to adopt our vision for process excellence.  Instead we had to gain buy-in by showing how it would positively impact their culture and restaurant performance. A key ‘selling’ tool has been sponsoring benchmarking visits to K&N and Pal’s for all of our franchisees.  These visits demonstrated the benefits of lean practices in a restaurant environment and we encourage those new to lean to benchmark those further along on the journey.

We began our journey with an intentional focus on developing both culture and processes and we realize and acknowledge both of these components need to be developed simultaneously and with balance and would encourage others to do the same.

Our ILC membership has been access to great training seminars, for low cost, and conveniently close to home.

ILC Board Member Anncouncements

Earlier this month, the ILC said good-bye to Board Member and Membership Team Lead Terry Arnold when Terry accepted a new role at Alliant Energy.  His new role will not afford him the time needed to be actively involved in the ILC Board.

The Board appointed Bridget Hill, Senior Continuous Improvement Consultant
at Cambridge Investment Research, Inc. in Fairfield to fill Terry's position on the board. The board is very pleased to have Bridget as part of the team.  We also wish Terry the best of luck in his new role.  Thank you Terry for your dedication to the ILC and for the great work you did in leading the Membership Team.
Thanks to Tanya Doyle, ILC Member, who presented a breakout session on Implementing Lean at EntreFEST.  Watch for Tanya's breakout presentation at the ILC's 2015 Fall Conference when registration opens in July.
