Director Hired for New Physical Therapist Assistant Program

Matthew Austin, PT, DPT, OCS, MTC

Welcome to Fort Wayne Dr. Austin! Trine’s PTA program will be based in the newly renovated, state-of-the-art Health Sciences Education Center on Parkview Hospital’s Randallia campus, alongside and integrated with the university’s recently accredited Doctor of Physical Therapy program. Trine University will begin taking applications for the PTA program in 2019, pending approval from CAPTE, for fall 2020.

“Upon graduation, students will have the ability to work in one of fastest-growing fields and pursue their passion for helping others through physical rehabilitation,” said Austin. “The PTA program at Trine University will be special in that graduates will not only have a bachelor’s degree in exercise science, they will have the opportunity to work in the classroom with their future Doctor of Physical Therapy colleagues. Graduates of Trine University’s PTA program will have the knowledge, competence and commitment to professional service to be leaders among their peers.”

Therapy Dog Team

DPT Student, Sarah Botts with her "furbaby" Maisey

After obtaining her Canine Good Citizen certification through the American Kennel Club and passing an observation with the Alliance of Therapy Dogs (ATD), Sarah and Maisey were ready for their Therapy Dog class. They visited nursing homes weekly for five weeks, and after additional observations under the watch of an ATD member, they officially became a Therapy Dog Team.

"Maisey has a special love for children, so I've reached out to many pediatric facilities in Fort Wayne. Last month we visited a preschool and it was a blast! I love to bring her anywhere and everywhere and am always open to new places," said Botts. "Hopefully someday Maisey will be able to provide therapy to my own patients, and we'll always continue visiting different places so she can spread happiness and smiles!"
