The six AppItUP finalists are currently in the app-development stage. The companies – Aer02Max, Animotion, Parkefy, ProNoto, Reclamate, and SleepStats – are now working with their development partners to produce a working prototype and a company strategy to be unveiled at Demo Day. This year’s Demo Day is taking place on April 21st at 9:00AM at World Café Live. Free tickets can be reserved here.

Penn commercialization partner IP Group has invested in two UPstart companies, Chip Diagnostics, Inc. and Prendo Systems, Inc. These are the second and third investments IP Group has made into UPstart companies. Previously, IP Group invested in Exyn Technologies, Inc

Chip Diagnostics, Inc., founded by Penn faculty member Dr. David Issadore, is a lab-on-a-chip platform addressing the need for rapid, inexpensive, and highly sensitive diagnostics. 

Prendo Systems Inc., founded by Penn faculty member Dr. Mark Yim, is a robotics company developing technologies related to affordable robotic manipulation for industry and the home. Eric Buckman is the CEO.

In its inaugural year, the DevelUPmed medical device program received over 50 submissions. After careful review by investors and entrepreneurs, three finalist companies were selected: Angiio, Shock Analytics, and SonoSolve. The companies are currently participating in the I-Corps business accelerator and will be working with NextFab and BDD to develop prototypes. The final event will occur in September, when the companies will pitch to a panel of investors with an opportunity to win a $50,000 offer of investment from Ben Franklin Technology Partners.

Liquid Biotech USA, Inc. was selected as a finalist for the 2016 Enterprise Awards by the Philadelphia Alliance for Capital and Technologies (PACT). The criteria for the award for a Life Sciences Startup Company includes being in operation for three years or less, a product or innovative technology with high potential for rapid market growth, as well as a management team with a proven record of accomplishment. The company is developing non-invasive diagnostics tests to allow clinicians to safely discover cancer earlier, to manage patients who have cancer more effectively, and to allow for a greater vigilance to those patients who are in remission from this deadly disease. Liquid Biotech USA, Inc. was founded by Penn faculty physicians Dr. Jay Dorsey, Dr. Gary Kao, and Dr. Stephen Hahn. The company is led by Philip Sass and Jeffrey Janco. Quantitative Radiology Solutions LLC was awarded a Phase I STTR grant by the National Science Foundation for “Automated object contouring methods and software for head and neck radiotherapy planning.” The grant will allow the company to continue the development of its Automatic Anatomy Recognition (AAR) tools for use in radiation oncology. QRS was founded by Penn faculty members Dr. Jay Udupa and Dr. Drew Torigian. Joe Camaratta is their President and CEO.

RightCare Solutions, Inc. was acquired by naviHealth, Inc., a Cardinal Health company. RightCare’s software helps hospitals and health systems assess patients for post-acute care needs, determine risk of readmission, and coordinate patient discharges to high-quality post-acute care providers. Full details about the acquisition are available here. RightCare Solutions, Inc. was founded by Dr. Kathryn Bowles of the University of Pennsylvania School of Nursing.
