THEATER...

The annual Free Preview of the Art Center Theater’s new season takes place Sunday, January 6th at 7 p.m. at the Theater. You’ll be treated to a delicious array of scenes and music, followed by an equally delectable sampling of light refreshments. Come see songs, drama and comedy excerpts from our 80th Anniversary season:

  • “Night Must Fall” is a revival of the first show ever done at the Art Center and will launch our anniversary celebration.  It’s a British murder mystery in the Agatha Christie vein.
  • “The Miser,” by Moliere, brings us an updated look at this 17th century classic that still has much to say about money, greed and family dynamics. But, hilarious, in Moliere’s inimitable way.
  • You’ll tap your feet and maybe sing along to a number from the summer musical, “Mamma Mia!” a musical that only exists for people to have fun.
  • A very funny scene from “Bless Your Heart” follows -a play about evolution, religion and Elvis.
  • Finishing off with a delightful song from the Christmas musical, “Seussical, the Musical!”
  • Interspersed throughout will be short interviews with the show’s directors and you’ll find out how you can win a portrait in oil of yourself (or a loved one), by noted Ojai artist Duane Eells, or dinner for two at the exquisite Ojai Valley Inn.

Free show, free food, and a look at the wonderful 80th anniversary season. Season tickets are now available for purchase – go to ojaiact.org or pick up a form at the Art Center.

"The Miser" is a classic farce written by Molière, first performed in 1668. It details the story of a wealthy and unpleasant miser--Harpagon--and his children. His daughter Elise wants to marry Valere, (a recent employee of her father), while his son Cleante wishes to marry Marianne, a young woman new to the district. Unbeknownst, Harpagon also wishes to wed Marianne while promising both of his children to others. The play unfolds with a mysterious theft of a moneybox filled with wealth. There is also much plotting and scheming, musical interludes, rascally servants, wealthy gentlemen, mistaken identities and a cop. For roles and character breakdown and further audition information, please go to Ojaiact.org.
