ART... Celebrating Norman Kirk – Gallery exhibit October 4 to October 29. Norman Kirk (born 1924) has had a long and successful career as an artist. As a child in Cleveland, he entertained his schoolmates with drawings of rocket ships. During the depression, supplies and funds for classes were at a premium, so Kirk filled his days at the Cleveland Art Museum (which later helped earn him an apprenticeship there) and attended city art classes. In high school, his art instructor recognized his talent and invited him to join an adult life drawing class. In 1984, Kirk was commissioned to illustrate the Olympic water events at Lake Casitas. Kirk was also the cover artist for the popular Ventura County Design House tours (no longer in existence). His paintings have won countless awards, and he has shown in the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, California Museum of Science and Industry, L.A. Municipal Gallery, the Riverside Art Museum, the Downey Art Museum, the Santa Paula Art Museum, and the Ventura County Museum of History and Art. Kirk is a Signature Member of the National Watercolor Society, Watercolor West and the Gold Coast Watercolor Society. Although Kirk has worked in other mediums, he is best known for his watercolors. He enjoys capturing the “underbelly” of things, such as a rusted old truck or a dilapidated barn set in nature. Kirk has contributed greatly to art and artists in Ventura County. Respected artist Hiroko Yoshimoto noted that Norman Kirk has “profoundly influenced and continues to shape art and culture in Southern California.”

Reception to honor this iconic artist is Saturday, October 19, 1 to 3 p.m.
In November 1939, The Ojai Art Center opened its doors for the first time and invited the community to come experience all that it had to offer – a place for theater, dance, music, and art. We are celebrating our 80th birthday with a special art exhibit and are inviting artists to participate in an open show with the theme “Celebration and Joy.”  Please bring art that reflects the theme to the Art Center on Friday, October 30, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.  The art will be on exhibit throughout November and December. Call 805-646-0117 for more info.
MUSIC... Sunday, October 6 at 2 p.m., returning to the Ojai Art Center, is the clarinet trio the Singer Chamber Players. This concert welcomes to their ranks Ventura's ever popular pianist, Miriam Arichea. Miriam has perform numerous concertos with Channel Islands Chamber Orchestra. Miriam has also performed with the Ventura College Symphony and San Luis Obispo Chamber Orchestra, as well as in solo and collaborative performances at the Ojai Arts Centre and Ventura Music Festival. Miriam serves as music director and pianist for community groups and events, including the Rubicon Theatre Company, the Ventura Unified Festival of Talent, and Temple Beth Torah. Miriam was the honored recipient of the 2014 Ventura Mayor’s Arts Award for Arts Educator. Clarinetist David Singer, founder of the trio, spent decades as principal clarinetist with the Grammy award-winning Orpheus Chamber Orchestra, and was recently interviewed by Donna Granata for Ventura's Focus on the Masters. Cellist Virginia Kron, a regular favorite on the Art Center series, recently retired from a quarter century with the Cabrillo Festival of Contemporary Music in Santa Cruz where she cultivated her interest in living composers under the baton of Marin Alsop.
LITERARY... The 80 word contest ended September 15. Please join us at a reception on Monday, October 14, at 7:00 pm. Have a beverage (or two), nibble on some nibbles, but more importantly, come meet the winners and hear their stories. First, second and third place winners in each category will receive a cash prize and will be asked to read their short stories at the reception. Seven honorable mention writers will also be chosen in each category, and will have the honor of sharing their stories at the reception.
We love sharing our space. This month we welcome the Ojai Storytelling Festival.
This year's festival will be overflowing with entertainment: music, fabulous stories, poetry, and comedy. Whether it's a night of hilarious laughter, a journey of imagination, a tale filled with mystery and suspense, a personal story of triumph, a ribald night of ribald tales or an inspiring workshop, the 19th annual Ojai Storytelling Festival is the place to be. The festival dates are October 24 - 27. Go to ojaistoryfest.org for more info and to purchase tickets.
THEATRE... Dr. Seuss is coming to the Art Center and bringing his friends. Seussical takes us into his world where we revisit beloved characters including The Cat in the Hat, Horton the Elephant, Gertrude McFuzz, Lazy Mayzie, and JoJo. The Cat in the Hat guides us into The Jungle of Nool where we see Horton, the kind hearted elephant who discovers a speck of dust containing Whoville.
A large cast will sing and dance their way into your hearts during the holidays. Directed by Gai Jones, produced by Herb Hemming.

Seussical opens November 22 and plays through December 15. Performances are Friday at 7:30 p.m., Saturday at 2 p.m. & 7:30 p.m., Sunday at 2 p.m. Please go to Ojaiact.org or 805-640-8797 for tickets.
