Cameroon

Thank you! We are so grateful for you and your partnership with our Wycliffe ministry. We are excited to share with you a little bit of what we have been  up to here in Cameroon the past month. We hope you enjoy a quick glimpse into our lives and ministry.

We are also excited for the opportunity to return to Virginia for two weeks (Oct. 3-Oct 18) to participate in the wedding of Matthew's best friend since 1st grade. It will be a quick trip to visit with family and attend the wedding.
We want to see as many people as we can, but we may not have enough time to see everybody.

12 Participants, 5 days, 2 operating systems, 1 trainer, 1 translation consultant-in-training, 1 expatriate linguist, and ParaTExt 7.5! This past week, I had the opportunity to lead a course for Bible translation teams and teach skills and methods to clean up their translations. These skills included spellchecking, checking consistency in parallel passages and key biblical terms, and of course…perfecting pesky punctuation. Some teams have already made the transition to Wasta Linux, so this is the first course I’ve taught with a mix of Windows and Linux machines!
We are off to a great school year at the Greenhouse. Above is our group photo from our Joint Learning Session where we had 46 students representing seven nationalities in kindergarten through six grade. At the end of the three weeks about half of these students left with their families to go live and serve in different villages in Cameroon. I have continued teaching five students in kindergarten where we have been focusing on numbers, letters, nursery rhymes, reading skills, handwriting, problem solving skills and more.
Today at church, the main Bible reading was from John 15 (”I am the vine; you are the branches.”) and as usual, we stood for the reading. Once we sat down, I [Matthew] realized that the man next to me had a new-looking Bible that was not in French or English, and he was quietly re-reading the passage to his wife. I snuck this photo (yes, I know…in church [I’m still that kid playing with cars under the pews]), and later found out that it was the Bum New Testament. Seeing local translations in use even here in the big city is a great encouragement.
Praises and Prayers
  • Praise that we are adjusting to our new routines and schedules. Pray that we continue to find a balance between our ministry, our marriage and relaxation.
  • Last month we both had a battle with sickness but praise be to God that we both recovered quickly and are healthy. Continue to pray for good health.
  • Praise that we are able to fly to Virginia for two weeks to attend a wedding. Pray for our time spent with family and friends.
  • Praise for a great start to the school year for Teresa and great opportunities to work with different language groups for Matthew!
  • Continue to pray for the nation of Cameroon as well as the surrounding countries.
Cameroonian women love to have dresses made in different fabrics. They have special fabrics for different events and holidays. I was given two dresses by someone and had to have them altered just a little bit to fit. This is me with my seamstress, wearing one of the dresses. I cannot wait to have another dress or skirt made!
Louez Le Seigneur  (Praise the Lord)
Loues-Le le matin (Praise Him in the morning)
Louez-Le le soir (Praise Him in the evening)
Louez-Le Seigneur (Praise the Lord)
Louez-Le en tout temps, alléluia! (Praise Him all the time, alleluia!)

Continuing to Sing God's Praise,
