The Carbon Literacy Project: Climate Change learning for everyone.

Welcome! The latest news from The Carbon Literacy Project...

"Climate change does not respect borders; it does not respect who you are - rich and poor, small and big. Therefore, it is what we call 'global challenges,' which require global solidarity."
~ Ban Ki-Moon, Secretary-General of the United Nations

Carbon Literacy 10 for 10 Accelerator

It’s an exciting year for us here at The Carbon Literacy Project, as 2022 sees in our 10 year anniversary. In fact, the rate of take-up is growing at a jaw-dropping rate, seeing growth of over 50% last year. This is an unprecedented rate of growth for a small charity with no core funding, and we couldn’t have gotten to where we are now without you all. That being said, it’s also simply not good enough. We all know that the science demands much more of us, and further, faster action in the race against climate change.

 25,000 Certified Learners!

We are thrilled to announce that we have very much started the year as we mean to go on, reaching another learner milestone less than a week into 2022! This means that over 50,000 actions have been pledged, and whether each of these actions produces tiny or massive carbon savings, together, they build to have a tremendous carbon impact.

Since then, a further 1,155 learners have been certified, and as we continue to scale up at increasing speed, we plan to make an announcement every 5,000 learners, rather than every thousand. However, at the end of each month we'll do a round-up of current numbers, which you can always find the latest updated graphic in the bottom right corner of the newsletter, and on our About Us page.

Top-Down rEVolution

Following on from Electric Car rEVolution, this piece continues the series into the EV revolution.

The government has a responsibility to make EVs more viable, not only for us, but for the manufacturers too. And though charging our battery-electric vehicles is currently considered one of the biggest challenges to the EV revolution, we actually have over 35,000 public charge point connectors in the UK, which is more than the number of petrol stations.

2021 Review: CL in Local Authorities

Momentum for Carbon Literacy in Local Authorities across the UK really began to build across 2021, with 1834 council staff members being certified as Carbon Literate across 163 councils. One of the highlights of the year was the Local Authorities Focus Day, hosted on the 11th of November as part of our COP26 programme of events. The day explored how Carbon Literacy can help Local Authorities deliver climate action, and showcased some of the very best training taking place across UK councils.

 10th Anniversary Stories: 2012

2022 is an exciting year for us here at The Carbon Literacy Project, as it marks our 10 year anniversary. So, we’re sharing 10 stories for the 10 years of Carbon Literacy; one story for each year, shared once per month, in the 10 months leading up to the official anniversary date in October. For story number one, we’re heading all the way back to 2012, to the launch of Carbon Literacy.

Call for Applications: CLO Awards 2022

Engaging with Carbon Literacy and becoming a Carbon Literate Organisation (CLO) is a fantastic way for organisations to accelerate their climate-change action, show their commitment to the low carbon agenda, and help reach our climate targets. Due to ongoing uncertainty cast by the global pandemic, we were not able to hold our award ceremony in 2020, or 2021 – meaning 2022 will be triple-packed with this three year’s worth of awardees in attendance – we hope to see you there too!

The Carbon Literacy Project is a unique project, working with everyone who lives, works or studies, to offer a day's worth of training to the Carbon Literacy Standard. Once Carbon Literate, we have an instinctive understanding of the carbon impacts of our activities, are able to make informed choices, and, driven by the urgency, act positively to address climate change.

'Resource of the Month'

Why has there been so little mention of saving Black lives from the climate emergency? In this TED Talk, @DavidLammy, Member of Parliament for Tottenham, explains that for too long, racial justice efforts have been wrongly distinguished from climate justice work.
