Beautiful and reflective music
from Spain, Portugal, and Latin America

Dear ABO Family:

It's November, and you know what that means – it's time for our annual performance of music from Latin America!

Rather than the larger-scale program of upbeat, rhythmic music from South America we'd initially planned, we instead chose to prepare an introspective and reflective program meant as both a meditation upon the many losses we have all encountered in 2020 and an expression of hope for a brighter future. Premiering on our
YouTube channel on Saturday, November 21st at 7:30pmLamentación y Esperanza (Lamentation & Hope) is a program of beautiful music from Spain, Portugal, and Latin America whose texts touch on themes of loss and hope. We recorded in perhaps the most perfect space for this repertoire in the country: San Antonio's beautiful and historic Mission Concepción, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Visit our website to purchase a ticket; pay-as-you-can ticketing is available as well as our usual suggested ticket price levels. After your purchase (make sure to provide a valid email), your name and email will go into a database and once the video is uploaded to our YouTube channel and ready for its premiere next week, you'll receive a message with the address for the video, as well as a link to the digital program with translations and program notes. The video will be available indefinitely to all who have the link.

It's no exaggeration to say that the effects of the Covid-19 pandemic have left ABO in a precarious financial position. We're unable to perform publicly and audiences' responses to paid online content is unclear. We've lost 56% of our City of Austin grant, our largest single source of funding. We're currently operating on the slimmest of budgets relying mostly upon our savings from inactivity earlier this year.

The only way for us to reach the light at the end of the tunnel is through your support – financially through purchasing online concert tickets and making donations (remember when we raised about $4k from donations of $50 and under?), and organizationally through telling others about us. Some of the music we perform is quite literally performed nowhere else in the country, or even in the world. We want to be able to continue to be there for you in the years to come – can you be there for us now?

We hope you'll join us for Lamentación y Esperanza! We very much missed performing for you in person, especially this program, but we think our love for this music and the excitement we felt for being able to come together after so many months apart were palpable in the video, and we look forward to sharing it with you via the interwebs.

Musically yours,

Billy Traylor – Artistic Director & Founder
Stephanie Noori – Concertmaster
Chelsee Sandaker – Ensemble Administrator

What's New With ABO

Go to the Principals' Office!

February 20, 2020 (tentative)

Ten years ago, we formed as a chamber ensemble, and we’ll commemorate the midpoint of our tenth season with a return to the original conception we had for our band! This program of chamber music, curated and performed by seven of our principal players, will be a smörgåsbord of chamber music from all over Europe, with each piece being introduced by the player who selected it.
