Earth Day Poetry & Photo Contest On NOW!!

The Earth Day celebration in Maple Ridge invites citizens to submit photos and poetry in a competition opening March 1 to showcase this year’s theme of “Energy!’ The poetry contest will consist of a youth category (ages 5-12) and a teen category (ages 13-18) and the photo contest will award six winners, three youth (17 and under) and three adults (18 and over). Winners of the contests will be able to share their work at the Earth Day celebration.
This year, School District 42 is encouraging students to participate, and the school with the most entries will win a showing of the movie “The Lorax” at their school.
Entries for both contests should be sent to earthdaycontests@gmail.com , and student entries should note which school they are from. Photo submissions should be sent in jpg format in a minimum of 1MB file size. The competitions close on April 2.
“Last year the photo entries were posted to the Celebrate Earth Day in Maple Ridge Facebook
page, and people were encouraged to vote for their favourites,” said photo contest coordinator, Ross Davies, “We’ll be doing it again this year, so we’re encouraging the community to watch the page and be sure to vote for their favourite photos when they’re posted in April.”
“The theme can be anything people want to include that has to do with energy,” said poetry contest coordinator, Joe Robinsmith, “Solar, wind, water, human energy, green energy - the ideas are unlimited and we just want to see how creative people can be.”
The annual Earth Day Celebration in Maple Ridge kicks off at 10am on Saturday April 23, 2016 at Memorial Peace Park, with this year’s theme of ENERGY! The annual eco-inspired family event will include many of the same features it has in the past, including interactive booths & activities, flash mobs, a food truck festival, hands-on crafts, entertainers, and of course a special Haney Farmer’s Market. Interested groups can visit the event website at www.mrearthday.ca for all the latest info or to register as a booth, activity, performer, or volunteer!
