Thanks to everyone who came to Earth Day or stopped by our booth at the Ridge Meadows Home Show! June has been a busy month and with Rain Barrel sales picking up and new Summer Students, it doesn't seem to be letting up anytime soon!
There will be NO CURBSIDE RECYCLING PICKUP and the Recycling Depot will be CLOSED on Friday, July 1 due to the Canada Day stat holiday :)

Welcome, Taylor!

Hello! I’m Taylor Robinson, and I am one of two Community Education Assistants at the Depot this summer. I became more interested in environmental practices after taking the Metro Vancouver Sustainability Toolbox course in school, and as a result I am now pursuing a degree in Sustainable Business at Simon Fraser University. Apart from the environment, I’m an avid reader, knitter, and a dedicated cat owner. I’ve lived in Maple Ridge for as long as I can remember, and I’m very excited for this chance to give back to my community. If I don't see you at the Recycling Depot, make sure you come to one of our summer events so I can get to know you!
My first week has been anything but boring. Each day brings a new surprise. I’ve had the opportunity to help sort on the front lines, with materials like glass, plastic, and metal. On Tuesday I went out in a recycling truck and helped collect recycling from schools. I really enjoyed watching the truck pick up and dump the bins. The volume of recycling was astounding – we had to return to the Depot to unload before the end our route. It was crazy to see so much recycling, particularly knowing how much effort goes into sorting at the Depot and beyond. For some products, like aluminum, this process can go on indefinitely; other products such as paper can only be recycled five to seven times before becoming unusable.
I’m really enjoying working here. The staff is helpful, friendly, and committed to their jobs. They offer a wide range of products, including rain barrels and bear-resistant totes, to help residents become more environmentally friendly. In addition, I had the chance to shadow Dan Mikolay, the Environmental Educator, when he taught a preschool class about bear safety. The children were adorable, and the potential to get into schools and teach children about recycling, compost, wild animals, and waste reduction is incredibly exciting! I look forward to whatever the rest of the summer brings my way.

Ordered Your Rain Barrel Yet?

Due to last summer's draught, and rumours this summer's may be even worse, Rain Barrels have recently become an extremely popular item. We sold out the first three batches we ordered (130 total!), so we've ordered another 90 - we'll see how long they last and see if we have to order more :)

The Rain Barrels help lower municipal water demands and save energy at water treatment facilities by reducing water pollution and storm water runoff. Rain water, free from chlorine and water treatment chemicals, is an excellent water source for lawns, plants and gardens.
