Featured Recovery Success Story

Donald C. was living in a drug-infested boarding home and had recently been homeless when he was referred to Anka. He had not been sober for years and was non-adherent to a medication or mental health regimen. Since becoming a client of Anka, Donald has consistently remained on his medications and has kept his mental health appointments. He has also been sober for one year, his longest period of sobriety in years.

The Anka case manager/money manager learned that both of his parents are deceased and made a filing on his behalf for their death benefits. Donald received $32,000 in back pay from that inquiry and had his SSI check increased by several hundred dollars. With the money he received, Donald is now living in a beautiful home with a lease/purchase agreement. He has been able to buy furniture and decorate his home which he is loves to do as he is very creative.

One of our clients with an extensive history of is working with the ACT team toward expunging his criminal record . Since in treatment his goal to maintain stable housing has been accomplished, he has learned to manage money and is actively seeking employment.  A second client who transferred from a Fulton County team to Columbus, has engaged with the team, been awarded SSI, regularly visits his primary care doctor and dentists, and is maintaining good family relationships.

DEKALB
Five DeKalb clients have had significant successes this month including avoiding hospitalization for 1 month and achieving 1 month sobriety, attending 12 step meetings and SA group; decreased psychotic symptoms; attending Dual Diagnosis and SA group for one month and being able to drive independently to the clinic; planning to return to school in August; remaining in the community for 3 full weeks when previously, had not been able to avoid hospitalization or incarceration for more than 4 days at a time.   These successes are proof that ACT services can make a difference in individual lives.
