A reflection on the Service of Charity
We joyfully welcome and pray for our new pontiff, Pope Francis, and look forward to continuing to live out our call to charity with Pope Francis as our spiritual leader. He will build upon the gifts the Pope Emeritus, Benedict XVI left the Church, including his great teachings on Charity.

In one of his last apostolic letters, “On the Service of Charity”, Pope Benedict explained that charity is integral to the Church’s mission on earth and offered a common framework to live out that call effectively. As he reminds us, charity is more than “collecting and distributing funds”, it is an opportunity to share God’s love with our brothers and sisters, to offer “refreshment and care for their souls.”

At Catholic Charities of Central Florida, putting these words into action is our challenge and our call every day. More than just material assistance, we offer hope and love to each person we serve. Whether a newly arrived refugee, a hungry child, a homeless mother, or a struggling family, we are committed to walking with our brothers and sisters on their journey to self-sufficiency.

Pope Benedict also notes that charitable initiatives are varied and may differ widely from each other. This is a gift to the Church and should be encouraged and supported! Catholic Charities is privileged to be one part of the good work being done in the Diocese of Orlando. Together with our parishes, schools, ministries, and associations of the faithful, we offer “a concrete witness of charity to those in need” and are a “sign of the sharing of all the faithful in the mission of the Church”.

Recalling the wisdom of our Pope Emeritus during these days of Lent, Catholic Charities remains committed to a spirit of collaboration and welcomes ways in which we can all support one another in doing the work of the Gospel. We thank you for the work that you do and for your continued generosity to those in need.

At just over halfway through the Lenten season, there is still plenty of time to be involved in Catholic Charities' 40 Ways in 40 Days program. Visit our website to view the full calendar or follow us on Facebook and Twitter to get daily reminders of the activities each day.
