With a little help from my friends

In recent weeks I seem to have lost my compass. In a modern capitalist culture where time is money and passion is the fuel of purpose, the losing of one’s compass is a dreadful thing. My rudder works fine, but it is in a submissive, unidirectional position at this stage, evoked by nothing, surrendered to the billowing to take me somewhere – I am not sure where. I used to know. It’s depressing.

The Credo of the African engineer

Final year university students representing the next generation of engineers recite the Credo of the African Engineering Practitioner - the credo is an engineering practitioner’s oath to honour the engineer’s role in finding the fine balance between development i.e. the provision of the fundamentals of human life, such as clean water, access to sanitation, roads and sustainability, a reference to upholding morals and ethical practice. Because being an engineer is more than just an occupation, it is a calling. Will you respond to the calling to reinstate engineering practitioners to their rightful place in society? Are you next?

SAICE CODE OF ETHICS

SAICE members, who are professionally registered, are bound to abide by the codes of conduct, which regulate their registration and may be disciplined should they fail to do so. The SAICE code of ethics is, however, necessary to provide a framework within which decisions between alternative courses of actions should be taken. Ethical judgment is needed to maintain the stability of our society without the undue imposition of formal regulations for every act.
