Changes To Online Application for Disability & Income Assistance 

There are new changes to the online application process for Disability & Income assistance, aimed at making applications easier.  Disability Alliance BC (DABC) will be monitoring the new system over the coming months. Applications can be submitted at For assistance, call (604) 872-1278.

MCFD Releases 2017-2020 Muti-Year Action Plan

The Ministry for Children and Family Development (MCFD)  has released their Multi-Year Action Plan for the upcoming years. The strategic action plan includes recommendations from Grand Chief Ed John's government report on Indigenous Child Welfare. The Federation of Community Social Services of BC has committed to working with government [to implement] this ambitious plan. MCFD and the Federation will be hosting a free briefing webinar on March 20th from 2-3 pm. Vancouver Foundation Grants Available

Develop grants for 2017 applications are opening for the Environment & Animal Welfare and Health & Social Development fields of interest. These are short term grants of up to $10,000 to help teams explore issues and move ideas forward into viable action plans. Here are the dates:
  • Environment & Animal Welfare: Opens March 20, 2017, deadline 13 April, 2017
  • Health & Social Development: Opens April 3, 2017, deadline 28 April, 2017

Ontario Telehealth Line-Breastfeeding Support
These short video lessons are combined with research and PDF resources to help guide parents in supporting their child using Assistive Technology for reading and writing. Free webinars about the course are held periodically and can be registered for here. The next one is on March 29.

The Ages & Stages Questionnaires are trusted resources to pinpoint delays as early as possible. The ASQ emotional tool has been recently updated with a monitoring zone and new norms and age ranges.

Designed for parents, grandparents and caregivers of all kinds, this resource provides research supported information on what’s “normal and healthy” for children in their social and emotional development, along with practical strategies for caring adults to actively create the nurturing environments that bolster Heart-Mind Well-being.”. It also provides activities to support you as a caregiver for your child.

This free service provides support for new and expectant mothers on breastfeeding information. BC Residents can call the toll free number 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. It is delivered by registered nurses and experts with training in breastfeeding and lactation support. There are also telephone interpreters available in over 100 languages.

This article proposes that when a child has a tantrum, this expression of emotion is their way of healing. It suggests that sometimes simply listening is the most effective way to respond to an upset child 

CRA Tax Return Updates & Reminders

CRA would like to remind you of tax benefits you may be eligible for. Remember to file on time—for most individuals the deadline is April 30th 2017.
  • Use NETFile certified software for easier online filing (here is a list of certified software).
  • If you have donated to charity, you may be eligible for a tax receipt. Use the MyCRA webapp to see a list of eligible charities. Remember to keep your receipt for six years after the end of the tax year for which you made a claim.
  • Free tax preparation assistance may be available to you—find more information here
  • You can authorize someone to file your taxes on your behalf by completing Form T103, Authorizing or Cancelling a Representative.  
  • Did you know you can also claim medical expenses? Check your eligibility here.
