“Teach us to number our days, that we may gain a heart of wisdom” (Psalm 90:12).

Have you heard of a “bucket list”? It’s a list of things people want to do before they die—before they “kick the bucket.”

There’s a website which lists popular choices. Skydiving, skinny-dipping, visiting the Grand Canyon and sleeping under the stars are among the selections.

All of it is an acknowledgment that we have a limited amount of time while on earth. What do we really need to get done before we depart?

Today’s devotional is a reminder to ensure the things that are most important to God are also the things that are most important to you.

Sure, fun things are fun. But look at the big picture trajectory of your life. One day you will stand before your Maker. Your bucket will have been kicked. Yes, we’ve all wasted some time. And yes, we’ve all made some mistakes and have our fair share of regrets. But will we be able to say we’ve trusted Jesus and made a good faith effort to keep first things first?

Are we living our lives
as if we’re alive?
Will God say we’ve lived
wasteful or wise?

--“The Shepherd’s Voice—a Bible reading and prayer.” I published this because I thought someone out there needed to hear and pray it today. It’s Ben Ruttan reading the Gospel on Sunday and my opening prayer.
