News from Germany!

But first: How about this as a Taiwan Christmas present for friends?

This is my new 2018 Taiwan Photo Calendar. It's in English as well as Chinese and German, features 12 of my favourite photos (no standard postcard shots, no Photoshop - I like the real life), and you can get it now if you want to.

Here it is on the Taiwanese Shopee 蝦皮 shopping platform.

Read below for more information and other ways to order it.

Are the media neglecting Taiwan?
I gave some presentations in Germany

I just spent some time in Germany, and apart from eating Schnitzel and potatoes, and sweeping autumn leaves to work off those calories, I gave some presentations on Taiwan in the German media.

The talks were based on my own experiences. I have been reporting from Taiwan for German media for more than 8 years now.

The three presentations were organized by Taiwan-German friendship organizations and took place in Hamburg, Frankfurt and Berlin.

This was Hamburg, in the Taiwanese representative office:

These were some of my theses:

  • Taiwan is still rarely represented in German news media
  • It is being perceived as less important than it really is
  • Most news reports focus on the China angle (potential for conflict) or on disasters (spectacular images)
  • Taiwan's situation is complicated and needs some explanation, and often there's not enough space or time
  • Since German interest in China is growing, the connection to China can give Taiwan some attention other mid-sized Asian countries (Vietnam, Malaysia...) don't get - but the flipside is that Taiwan is rarely represented in its own right
  • When it comes to the news agenda, most media function according to unwritten rules. I call this thematical mainstream
This was at Frankfurt University:

I have uploaded the Powerpoint of my complete presentation. View it here. (It's all in German.)

And this was at the Taiwanese quasi-embassy in Berlin, in their new event space on posh Gendarmenmarkt:
