Spring into summer with a New Forest Navigation course

Spring into Summer!

After a rather chilly start to the year its great to see some proper warm spring weather. Many people braved the cold, wind and once or twice the snow to take part in navigation courses. Now what we need is too much sun!

Four people completed the Bronze National Navigation Award Scheme, the second NNAS course this year and there are plenty more to come. Courses for local walking groups are proving popular and it is always a pleasure to meet and teach interested and like minded people.

As well as the NNAS, introduction, day one and day two navigation courses I am planning some wild camping and back packing courses! The first is planned for June on Dartmoor, an exciting wilderness area perfect for the wild camper!

A morning or full days map reading is proving to be really popular with groups & clubs, groups of friends and couples. A fun activity and chance to learn how to 'Go Beyond the Gude Book'.

Win! Win! Win! As promised I'm running a competition open to current news letter subscribers for four people to win a WHOLE DAYS navaigtion training during August. Read on to find out more.

Positive feedback for NNAS

learn advanced skills on a NNAs course!

Four people completed the first Bronze NNAS of the year in March and despite the rain they have already booked a Silver Dorset course in July! In contrast the first silver was held in amazing sunshine.

I was delighted to receive this feedback from Alan about the course.

I had thought I already knew how to read a map , but I now realise how much of the detail I was simply ignoring . Nigel showed us how to use a map properly, and how to combine the depth of detail on the map with a simple system to keep track of our position. As the course progressed we were introduced to additional concepts and information, in a steadily progressive way, until we were planning and leading route sections ourselves using map and compass . The iterative approach used on the course combined practice with learning in a way which kept things interesting whilst reinforcing the skills we had already gained.

This proved to be an excellent course, with excellent and patient instruction from Nigel, and I would not hesitate to recommend it to anybody interested in the outdoors.  "

National Navigation Award Scheme courses take place through the year in the New Forest, Isle of Wight and Dorset and can also be arranged for your group, club or frinds.

Groups always welcome

A number of informal walking groups, groups of friends and even some software engineers from the Ordnance Survey have come New Forest Navigation for some navigation training!

I can put together a morning, afternoon or a full days map reading course for any group size  in the New Forest or surrounding area including Dorset, South Wales or Dartmoor.

Why not book a group or bespoke navigation session as a birthday surprise, anniversary  gift or just as fun morning or day out with friends. Afterwards navigate your way to one of the local pubs or tea shops as a reward for your hard work!

I wrote about some of groups on the website news page

Smartphone GPS & mapping training

Voluntary members of Hampshire Search and Rescue (HANTSAR) spent a Sunday morning learning how to use Viewranger mapping software with Nigel from New Forest Navigation.

I have added a few news stories to the website news pages.

A couple of months ago I went on an overnight trip to the Black Mountains to scout out the mountain navigation, wild camping and backpacking potential. The late lingering snow made for a challenging and memorable trip.

I tried out some backpacking freeze dried 'Adventure Food' and wrote a few lines about it. It was OK but not something I would get again, although I still have other flavours to try out.

I led some ‘Walk and Learn’ map reading walks at the IW Walking Festival and wrote some words about it.

I had the pleasure to lead a Team Day for some software engineers from the Ordnance Survey, who you would expect to know all about maps and map reading...

Finally. I spent a morning training members of Hampshire Search and Rescue to use Viewranger smart phone GPS software.

Thanks for you interest in my courses and if you fancy a chat come along and say hello on Twitter or Facebook.
