A New School Year Has Begun

The official South Sudan school year began on February 6, and Abukloi is in full swing accepting new students. All new students take a placement exam before classes are finally formed. It is our goal to keep classes at a reasonable size to promote a productive learning environment. However, as the community increasingly understands the advantages of a good education, the demand for enrollment has burgeoned. While we try to accept as many qualified students as possible, we need to turn many students away.

Your support of our teachers and academic programs helps them educate as many future leaders as possible.
U.S. Ambassador to South Sudan Visits Abukloi

US Ambassador to South Sudan Thomas Hushek visited with members of the Abukloi community and others on a recent trip to Rumbek last week.

Speaking with Abukloi students, graduates, and teachers at the Rumbek Civic Engagement Center he was optimistic that South Sudan's leaders are committed to peace. He had just come from meetings with President Salva Kiir and opposition leader Riek Machar and said, "I can tell you the mood is very good . . . Everyone in Juba is working for peace.”

He added, "Everyone who works on development knows that education is key." Addressing the students present he said, "your generation will really decide the future of the country. There are going to be a few hard years because the economy will start to get better, but it will take a little while."

He refers to the benefits of social stability as the Peace Dividend. To get there we will need quality education, a lot of prayers, and dialog . . . "talking, talking, talking."

We are grateful the Ambassador chose to spend time with our community. It was a great honor.

School Director Plans Trip to U.S.

We are excited to announce that Abukloi's school director, Justin de Mathok, is planning a trip to the United States this spring. The Virginia board is excited to introduce Justin to some of our donors and local churches. We also hope to arrange meetings with organizations and agencies that can provide Justin with information and strategies to enhance and expand his skills as the school's director.
Justin is excited about this opportunity.
"Having worked for Abukloi the last six years, it inspired me to go back to school and add on my academic credentials . . . My ambition for Abukloi is to make known internationally. I and my team on the ground need to be like apostles, who were known for their acts, not their talk. According to Biblical book, they were doers, they had a destination and they were busily working toward it."

For almost 20 years, Justin has been a star football (soccer) player in South Sudan. He wants to use his fame as a national sports star "to change the society and train the young generation for the betterment of the community and the country at large." He believes Abukloi Secondary School is one of the finest schools in South Sudan and is dedicated to the success of its students.

If you are interested in having Justin speak to your organization or church, please contact to be put on the schedule.
Graduate Receives Scholarship
to Africa University

Africa University in Zimbabwe has offered 2019 graduate Akolde Vivian Madong a full scholarship to study Public Health. Conditions for the gift require that upon graduation she return to South Sudan to use her skills to further the betterment of the country. AU is a very competitive university, but the teachers at Abukloi feel Vivian is more than able to meet the challenge.
Vivian was Head Girl her final year at Abukloi.  Her favorite subjects were physics, English, maths, and agriculture. She also likes to draw. Vivian lives at home with her parents, five brothers, and two sisters. She expresses gratitude for all who have made Abukloi school possible for her.  It has given her hope and opportunity for a better life for herself, her family, and her community.
