U.S. Ambassador to South Sudan Visits Abukloi
US Ambassador to South Sudan Thomas Hushek visited with members of the Abukloi community and others on a recent trip to Rumbek last week.
Speaking with Abukloi students, graduates, and teachers at the Rumbek Civic Engagement Center he was optimistic that South Sudan's leaders are committed to peace. He had just come from meetings with President Salva Kiir and opposition leader Riek Machar and said, "I can tell you the mood is very good . . . Everyone in Juba is working for peace.”
He added, "Everyone who works on development knows that education is key." Addressing the students present he said, "your generation will really decide the future of the country. There are going to be a few hard years because the economy will start to get better, but it will take a little while."
He refers to the benefits of social stability as the Peace Dividend. To get there we will need quality education, a lot of prayers, and dialog . . . "talking, talking, talking."
We are grateful the Ambassador chose to spend time with our community. It was a great honor.
