Dear Friends,

We at Abukloi are saddened and angered by the continuing civil unrest in South Sudan.
Parts of the country are experiencing famine resulting in mass displacement. The Rumbek community, where Abukloi Secondary School is located, is suffering from chronic, persistent hunger.

Abukloi is not giving up.

Our secondary school's vision is to develop a new generation of peaceful leaders for South Sudan.

As our students’
Vision Statement says, they are
“Building Human Communities of Love, Honesty, Justice and Harmony”.

Student Deng Malok put it this way:

“The power of imagination makes us infinite. When I was in primary school at the age of 15 years, I imagined that I will preach peace to the people, and surely I’m doing some steps because now I’m a member of Peace Club at Abukloi and still I want to make it a reality . . . I’m a citizen of peace!!!”
Every year our students participate in Peace and Reconciliation training, learning how to be change agents within their community. They are learning how to create a new vision for South Sudan by confronting difficult issues, expressing fair ideas in non-confrontational ways, and building trusting relationships.

One of our students, Head Girl Eliza Yom, will represent the greater Lakes State in the national peace conference in Juba.

In fact, Abukloi Secondary was selected to represent all of Lakes State including Eastern Lakes and Gok States.
Our vision of peace is also expressed through tangible solution-oriented projects.

Two of our programs are tackling the food insecurity crisis. The students participate in agriculture training on the school grounds. The other project, Nancy’s Garden, is teaching 30 women in the community sustainable gardening. These projects feed hundreds of families. Both groups are tasked with sharing their knowledge with the greater community--exponentially teaching each other how to solve this enormous infrastructure issue.

Our new internet café brings a world of resources to the whole community. It even allows us to communicate directly with the students and offer encouragement—something all our donors can do via
Abukloi’s Facebook page and Twitter using @Abukloi.

The solutions to South Sudan’s civil unrest are complex and challenging.
However, we can keep moving forward and develop a generation ready to lead a safe and prosperous South Sudan for all.

Thank you for your continued support.
