Support the Laker for a Lifetime Team at the River Bank Run - May 10

Head downtown Grand Rapids on May 10 and support the Laker for a Lifetime team while helping out at the largest 25K road race in the country. The Fifth Third River Bank Run has more than 50,000 runners, walkers, spectators, and volunteers involved.

Alumni Spotlight - 2014 Distinguished Alumna Kathleen Vogelsang, '95 &'99

Kathleen Vogelsang, '95 & '99 is the Director and Chief Investment Officer for the Van Andel Institute. After earning her undergraduate degree in Finance from Grand Valley in 1995, Vogelsang was employed by Amway Global where she began her work for the Van Andel Family in July of 1997. She also went on to receive her M.B.A from Grand Valley in 1999.

Vogelsang is a board member of the GVSU Seidman College of Business Alumni Association. With expertise in institutional investment management, she serves on several endowment committees, including the investment committee for GVSU Endowment and Grand Rapids Community Foundation. in 2012 and again in 2014, she was named one of "The 50 Most Influential Women in West Michigan" by the Grand Rapids Business Journal.


Alumni Volunteer Celebration & Service Awards

The GVSU Alumni Association would like to show their appreciation by recognizing the service of all alumni volunteers at the Alumni Volunteer Celebration and Service Awards on Friday, May 16 at the L. William Seidman Center. The reception will begin at 5:30 p.m. with hosted beverages, followed by a dinner and formal program at 6:00 p.m. The event will also honor the 2014 Alumni Service Award recipients, Jacqueline Schafer, '00 & '05 and Kevin Schafer, '98.

What You Didn't Learn in College: Life 101 - May 20

Do you want to learn practical life skills to impress your friends and coworkers? Check out Life 101: What You Didn't Learn in College on May 20 from 5:30 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. at the Downtown Market Grand Rapids. Attend four interactive sessions with fellow Lakers, complete with crash courses in personal branding, shopping on a budget, innovation, urban farming and more! Cost is $15 with hors d'oeuvres and one drink ticket included. This event is hosted by the GVSU Young Alumni Council.

Registration is Now Open for the All Alumni Golf Outing

Get your team ready, because registration is now open for the 2014 All Alumni Golf Outing. Join dozens of fellow Laker alumni, friends, and family on July 19 at the Meadows Golf Course for this 18-hole scramble.

There will be a shotgun start at 1:30 p.m. The practice green and driving range will be available during registration between 12:00 p.m. and 1:15 p.m. Each golfer will receive an Alumni Association gift, swag bag, two adult beverage tickets, snacks throughout the day, an unlimited amount of non-alcoholic beverages, and a post-golf BBQ meal.

Washington D.C. Alumni Reception - May 22

Don't miss the upcoming GVDC Alumni Reception on May 22 at 6:30 p.m. Join GVDC Club Leaders Charlie Terrell,' 09Rick Rossow, '98, Shaun Brodie, '07, President Thomas J. Haas and Vice President of University Relations Matt McLogan at the Council for Advancement and Support of Education to mingle with fellow Laker alumni and discuss recent advancements at the university. The cost is $10 and includes appetizers and one drink ticket.

Lansing Area Alumni Lugnuts Baseball Outing - June 7

Join Lansing club leaders Alyssa Sagolla, '07, Tyler Tulluch, '12, & Luan Nguyen, 12 for an evening of Lugnuts Baseball on June 7 at Cooley Law School Stadium. The festivities will start at 6:35 p.m. with a fresh-off-the-grill feast in the Tailgate Terrace located in right field, followed by the Lugnuts game at 7:05 p.m. you'll enjoy from specially reserved seats. The cost is $18 for adults, $12 for ages 3-12, 2 and under are free of cost. This will include your ticket to the game and the meal.

Enjoy an evening of networking on June 18 with Triangle area alumna Kelly Vogel, '02 & '04 at the Hilton Garden Inn in Morrisville, North Carolina. Mingle with fellow Laker alumni, Chris Barbee, '88 of GVSU Alumni Relations and Jill Dooley, '90 & '99 of GVSU University Development and get updated on all things Grand Valley. The cost is $10 per person, which includes hors d'oeuvres and one drink ticket.

Head to the Dunhill Hotel on June 19 for a Charlotte, North Carolina Area Alumni Reception. Join Ann Hartlieb, '12, Paige Laurain, '12, and other area alumni as they welcome Chris Barbee, '88 of GVSU Alumni Relations and Jill Dooley, '90 & '99 for an evening of networking from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. The cost is $10, with hors d'oeuvres and one drink ticket included.

Young Alumni West Michigan Whitecaps Game - July 16

Join the Young Alumni Council on July 16 for a West Michigan Whitecaps Game. It will be an evening of baseball and networking with your fellow Laker alumni, complete with a BBQ that will start at 5:45 p.m. The game will begin at 7:00 p.m. The cost is $18 for adults, $12 for children ages 3-12, and 2 and under are free of cost. If you don't have any Whitecaps ballpark attire, sport your GVSU gear!

Cross Country/Track & Field Alumni Reception, Fun Run, Tailgate

Join your fellow cross country/track & field alumni for an alumni reception, fun run, and tailgate hosted in conjunction with the Division II National Championship meet in Allendale. These events will take place on May 23-24. The cost is $15 flat rate for all of the following activities:

May 23: Adults only reception from 8:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. at the Main Street Pub. Cash bar and heavy appetizers included.

May 24: Family fun run at 9:00 a.m. followed by a tailgate at 10:00 a.m.

Five GVSU Alumni Finish the 2014 Boston Marathon

Five Grand Valley cross country/track & field alumni crossed the finish line on Monday, April 21 at the Boston Marathon. Competing in a 36,000-athlete race, Susie Rivard, '08, Sarah Gryniewicz, '12, and Eileen Creutz, '13 finished in the top 4,000 and Ashley Wharton, '07 & '11 and Kylen Cieslak, '11 finished in the top 6,000.

President Emeritus Arend D. Lubbers Honored at Hometown Heroes Celebration

Each year the American Red Cross honors and celebrates local community heroes. This year, Grand Valley President Emeritus Arend D. Lubbers will be receiving the Henry Dunant Global Impact Award, for his encouragement to students of Grand Valley State University to reach beyond the borders of the classroom, and engage with communities around the world and to bring those experiences home to Grand Rapids.

The American Red Cross honored Lubbers at a reception in Grand Rapids on May 1.

Career Center Hosts Internship Recognition Luncheon

The GVSU Career Center held its eighth annual Internship Recognition Luncheon on April 15 to honor the accomplishments of talented student interns as well as employer partners who are providing invaluable experiential opportunities to students. Jacob Rohde, a senior finance student, was named Outstanding Intern of the Year. Ruth Stevens, assistant legal studies professor, received the Internship Advocate of the Year Award. The Internship Employer of the Year recognition were awarded to Meijer, Inc. (for-profit) and GoodTemps, Inc. (non-profit).

Offering internships is a great way to involve students in meaningful, productive work while energizing an organization with fresh ideas. If you are interested in developing an internship program at your place of business, contact Rachel Becklin at or 616-331-3468.

GVSU Named 'Green College' for the Fifth Year

The Princeton Review has named Grand Valley State University one of the country's most environmentally responsible colleges for the fifth year in a row. GVSU has been included in 'The Princeton Review's Guide to 332 Green Colleges: 2014 Edition.' This guide profiles institutions that demonstrate notable commitments to sustainability in academics, campus infrastructure, activities and career preparation.
