Alumni Spotlight - 2016 Distinguished Alumna Dr. Nkechy Ekere Ezeh, '92 & '93

Dr. Nkechy Ekere Ezeh received both a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Language and Literacy (1992) and a Master of Education Degree in Early Childhood Education (1993) from Grand Valley State University along with a Doctorate in Education with an emphasis on Child and Youth Studies from Nova Southeastern University. She is an Associate Professor of Education and the Director of the Early Childhood Education Program at Aquinas College. Dr. Ezeh also holds the position of Founder and CEO of the Early Learning Neighborhood Collaborative in Grand Rapids. 

Dr. Ezeh will be honored on April 29 at an awards dinner with Outstanding Educator award honoree Dr. Greg Wolffe. The two will also be recognized at Commencement on April 30.

Thank You to all the 2016 Community Outreach Week Participants

Over 1,000 alumni, students and friends of the university made an impact volunteering in their communities March 19-26, 2016 during Community Outreach Week. Projects varying from neighborhood clean ups and preparing meals for families in need to cleaning one of the most popular beaches in Brazil! Alumni around the world showed their Laker pride and volunteers shared photos of their experiences. Volunteers from this week and throughout the year will be celebrated at the Volunteer Celebration and Service Awards Friday, May 13, 2016.

2016 Community Outreach Week

SPNHA and LGBT Personal Branding Workshop

On Thursday, April 14 the SPNHA and LGBT Alumni Chapters will be hosting a personal branding workshop for SPNHA and LGBT undergraduate upperclassmen and graduate students. Heather Dixon, '05 will be present to take professional head shots and Kim Bode, '02 will present a 30 minute presentation entitled, “Building Your Personal Brand: How to Market Yourself.”

The Power of 10 Tour is on the road for the April, May and June and you won't want to miss the chance to connect with T. Haas, ask your questions, and here about the latest additions to your alma mater!. The cities left on his list include Washington DC (April 18), Denver (May 19), Phoenix (May 20), Detroit (June 16), and the GRAND Finale in Grand Rapids (June 23).

Volunteer at GradFest

Help welcome new graduates into the Alumni Association during Grad Fest! Grad Fest helps graduating students take care of all of their commencement needs in one place. Share in this experience by helping students pick up their caps and gowns and commencement tickets while getting them excited about becoming a part of the Alumni Association! Volunteer shifts are available at the Allendale or Pew Campus during April 18-21.  Commencement will take place on April 30.

Grandparents, Grandkids, and Grand Valley 2016 Summer Camp

For all grandparents and grandkids who share a love of exploring and trying new things, this summer camp is for you! G3 2016 is a three-day residential, and now commuter, experience planned for June 21-23, 2016, during which grandparents and grandchildren (ages 8 to 12) attend a series of sessions offered by GVSU faculty to showcase their discipline. Registration closes April 30, so sign up today!

The Lubbers Regatta Grub & Brew Fest

The 21st Annual Don Lubbers Cup Rowing Regatta will take place on Spring Lake April 8-10. The event is based at the Spring Lake Yacht Club with a Learn-to-Row activity on Friday, April 8, and the regatta on April 9-10. As a way of increasing community involvement with the regatta The Chamber of Grand Haven, Spring Lake and Ferrysburg is hosting a school spirit competition throughout the weekend, with the main event being held at Old Boys' Brewhouse from 6-10 p.m. on April 9. The event will feature live music, Michigan breweries, and local restaurants competing for the Grub Fest Championship title. Wear Grand Valley apparel to show your Laker pride to give the GVSU Rowing team a chance to win $500 for their program for the most school spirit.

1st Annual Coach Meerman Memorial Golf Outing

Join fellow golfers on Saturday, May 28 at Moss Ridge Golf Club & Banquet Center for the 1st Annual Coach Meerman Memorial Golf Outing. The Coach Jim Meerman Memorial Scholarship will help walk-on student athletes at Grand Valley complete their degree where Coach Meerman played football from 1978-81. The scholarship will be supported through entry fees ($75/person, $300/team). The event will get underway with a 9:00 a.m. shot gun start followed by an awards banquet and chicken dinner. Women's Basketball Season Ends with Final Four Appearance

For just the second time in school history the Women's basketball team took part in the NCAA Division II Final Four Basketball Tournament. The Lakers also recorded the third most wins in school history with 26 on the season.

GVSU Women Finish 5th and Men 7th at NCAA Swimming and Diving National Championships

The GVSU women claimed a fifth-place finish with 226 points, the best-ever finish for the women's program at the NCAA Championships while the Laker men finished seventh with 233.5 points.  The Lakers also earned three national championships.

Campus community mourns death of professor

The Grand Valley community is mourning the death of Julie Chlebo, a longtime professor in the College of Education, who died March 19. Chlebo, associate professor of early childhood education, was known for her caring attitude with students. "Julie was an exceptional professor who always went the extra mile with her students," said John Shinsky, interim dean of the College of Education. Her scholarly interests included Waldorf Early Childhood Education, Head Start and Jewish Early Childhood Education.
