Join the international "Giving Tuesday" movement on December 2

We have a day for giving thanks, we have two days for getting deals (Black Friday and Cyber Monday). Now, we have #GivingTuesday, a global day dedicated to giving back, taking place on Tuesday, December 2, 2014. #GivingTuesday was founded in 2012 and launched a global movement that has engaged over 10,000 organizations worldwide. 

GVSU is a proud founding partner of #GivingTuesday. This year alumni, students, faculty and staff will start making donations toward the Academic Supplies and Textbook Loan program, which assists students who cannot afford the classroom accessories necessary for learning. The fundraising effort starts at 12:01 a.m. and ends at 11:59 p.m. on December 2, so click below to add a reminder to your calendar.


Lakers come "Back in Blue" to Allendale for Homecoming 2014

It was a successful homecoming weekend with hundreds of Laker alumni returning to the Valley for a sunny Laker Legacy celebration. Alumni from all parts of the world came back for a week full of events, ending in a 17-3 Laker football victory against Wayne State on Saturday, October 11.

I Want to be an Astronaut Film Screening- Alumni and friends attended this event to view the premiere of a documentary produced by David Ruck, '04 & '07.
Rowing Team Christening & Luncheon
5K Walk/Run & Pancake Breakfast- Lakers attended the 5K walk/run and topped it off with a warm breakfast of coffee, juice and pancakes. 
Tailgate & Campus Expo- The largest crowd of the day showed up for the tailgate and campus expo. Lakers enjoyed fun for all ages with a bounce house, games, food, and live music.

Spotlight feature: Victor Sultana, '08 - building his dreams in the greater Grand Rapids area

Victor Sultana, '08 always knew he was meant to build a dream of his own. His time at Grand Valley helped him discover what path he was meant to take. Sultana received a degree in marketing from GVSU in 2008, and immediately began work in the field. He is currently the program marketing manager for Herman Miller, Inc. and the owner of Victor Axe + Tool, a company he founded in 2011.

Austin alumni networking reception - November 13

Join Austin Alumni Club leader Amanda Babcock, '04 and GVSU Alumni Relations staff member Abigayle Sloan, '07 for a laid back networking reception at The Dogwood on November 13. Get updated on all the latest Grand Valley news, mingle with fellow Lone Star State Lakers, and get a chance to win some Laker swag! The cost is $15 per person and includes heavy appetizers, beer and wine.

Wear your ugliest attire to the Metro Detroit alumni bowling party - December 5

Join the Metro Detroit Alumni Club for its annual Ugly Sweater Holiday party by heading to the lanes on December 5. Enjoy a night of bowling at Novi Bowl and an evening of fun mingling with fellow Lakers. The cost is $15 and includes two games of bowling, shoe rental, pizza, and a ticket for one alcoholic beverage. The event is from 7:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m.

Please bring a canned food item to be donated to Gleaners Community Food Bank.

Annual Chicago alumni club holiday party - December 11

Head to the Blackfinn Ameripub on Thursday, December 11 for the annual Holiday Ugly Sweater Party with the Chicago Alumni Club. Wear your ugliest attire and enjoy a night with fellow Lakers from the Windy City. The cost is $15 and includes hors d'oeuvres and one drink ticket. The event will is from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.

Bring the family for holiday brunch with Santa & Louie - December 13

Join the GVSU Young Alumni Council for a holiday brunch with Santa & Louie in the Hager-Lubbers Exhibition Hall. On Saturday, December 13 from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., come out and enjoy fun for all ages while exchanging holiday greetings with other Lakers. The cost is $7 per person, children 12 and under are free of charge.

GVSU hockey grads travel across the country to compete in annual alumni game

On Saturday, October 18, dozens of former hockey players returned to West Michigan for the 5th annual GVSU hockey alumni game at the Georgetown Ice Arena. Some players traveled from as far away as Phoenix, Arizona for the event. Following the alumni game, 32 of the former players watched the current DII GVSU Hockey Team play Central Michigan.

Volunteer at GradFest - November 19 & 20

Help future Laker alumni as they prepare to walk across the stage for commencement by volunteering at GradFest. Students will pick up their cap, gown, and commencement tickets and celebrate their achievements. Shifts are available from 9:00 a.m. to 6:15 p.m. on Wednesday, November 19 at the Kirkhof Center on the Allendale Campus or from 10:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, November 20 at the Richard M. DeVos Center on the Pew Campus.

Scholarship students thank the donors who supported them

Recently, Grand Valley scholarship donors, initiators and 2014 scholarship recipients came together at the bi-annual Scholarship Celebration Dinner. Since the last Scholarship Celebration in 2012,  there were 42 new scholarships created for a grand total of 361 scholarships for over 1,400 students a year. If you have created or supported a student scholarship, thank you! We truly appreciate your generosity, and we invite you to watch our GV student scholarship recipients in action.

Four laker alumni compete in 2014 Detroit Marathon

A handful of Lakers were spotted at the 2014 Detroit Free Press/Talmer Bank Marathon and Half Marathon on October 19 in downtown Detroit. Courtney Brewis, '13 claimed first place in the women's marathon. Sarah Gryniewicz, '12 ran the international half marathon, and Betsy Graney, '14 and Josh Moskalewski, '13 both ran the U.S. half marathon.

GVSU celebrates 2nd annual Founders Day

October 23 was a day full of events and activities as Grand Valley celebrated its second annual Founders Day. There were 282 flags displayed on the Allendale and Grand Rapids campuses to recognize Grand Valley's 282 founders. Throughout the day, President Haas passed out cupcakes to students at Fresh Food Company and Kleiner Commons, and the Laker Marching Band performed by the Cook Carillon Tower. Celebrations were also held on the Holland and Traverse City campuses.

The College of Community and Public Service is kicking off its 10th anniversary celebration with a free screening of the film What is Philanthropy?. Join Dr. Salvatore Alaimo and a panel on Friday, November 14 from 6:30 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. for this event. A discussion will follow the screening.
