Bust a Move! Volunteer at Freshmen Move-In on August 19

Lend a hand and help welcome incoming freshmen to the Grand Valley community by volunteering at Freshmen Move-In. Alumni volunteers will be helping new students move into their campus homes on August 19. Both morning and afternoon shifts are available. Alumni volunteers will be given a GVSU t-shirt, unlimited water and Gatorade throughout their moving shift, and a complimentary breakfast and/or lunch.

Rockin' on the River 80's Style - August 7

Are you a fan of "Throw Back Thursday"? Join fellow alumni on August 7 along the banks of the beautiful Grand River! This 80's themed fundraiser runs from 6:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at the L. William Seidman Center at the GVSU Pew Campus. Flashback to the glory days in the 80's with music by area cover band, Rocket 8. Cost is $35 and includes food, music, and a $20 donation to the Pathways Scholarship program.

Apply for a Position on the Board of Directors or Young Alumni Council

Serve as a voice for more than 95,000+ Lakers by becoming a member of the Board of Directors. The Alumni Association is looking for individuals that are dedicated, energetic, and creative to help shape the future of the university and maintain its high level of excellence.

Positions are also available for the Young Alumni Council. Help plan events throughout the year and advocate the needs of fellow Lakers. Apply for the council today and become an advocate for recent graduates of Grand Valley.

Alumni Spotlight: Christopher Gale, '12, A Committed Member of the Boys & Girls Club

Christopher Gale, '12 attended the Boys and Girls Club of Greater Holland from the time he was a second grade student until he arrived at Grand Valley State University as a freshman in 2009. The club was not only a fun after school activity for him growing up, but it was also a place of encouragement, and one of the biggest reasons he chose to pursue a college degree.

After receiving his degree in Public Administration and Nonprofit Management in 2012 from Grand Valley, he went on to pursue his Master of Public Administration at Villanova University, which he completed in 2014. He is now the manager of literacy initiatives for the Boys and Girls Club of Philadelphia.

Metro Detroit Alumni Summer Picnic - July 20

Head to Stony Creek Metropark on July 20 for a summer afternoon with the Metro Detroit Alumni Club leaders. A picnic and games will be set up at Eastwood Beach from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. The cost is $5 per person and includes a picnic style lunch and activities. Bring your family and friends for this casual and fun gathering!

The Varsity Athlete Challenge Starts Now!

Grand Valley State University Athletics recently announced the inaugural Varsity Athlete Challenge. The goal behind this friendly challenge is to encourage former student athletes to donate to a fund of their choice. The varsity team with the highest percentage of participation this fiscal year (July 1, 2014 - June 30, 2015) and the team with the largest increase in participation from the previous year will each win $1,000 for their varsity team. Help current student athletes by making a donation today!

New Hosford Family Scholarship

The Kelly Cares Foundation presented a $50,000 check to the Hosford Family Scholarship. This scholarship honors Jamie Hosford, a 12-time Laker letterwinner who passed away in March 2014. The scholarship will be awarded to qualified students from Rockford High School.

GVSU Claims Ninth Learfield Sports Directors' Cup Trophy

Grand Valley Athletics took top honors in the Learfield Sports Directors' Cup for the ninth time in the past 11 years. The Lakers scored 1,030 points in 14 sports. Second place went to West Texas A&M with 708 points. The Learfield Sports Directors' Cup trophy, commonly known as the all-sports trophy, is presented to the top athletic department in the country, based on national finishes in seven men's and seven women's sports.

Laker First Baseman Signs Deal with Detroit Tigers

Former Grand Valley first baseman and National Player of the Year by Daktronics, Giancarlo Brugnoni, '14, signed as a free agent with the Detroit Tigers on June 12. He is now one of four Lakers currently participating in affiliated professional baseball.

Kirkhof College of Nursing Alumni Fall Reception - September 15

Save the date for the annual Kirkhof College of Nursing Alumni Fall Reception on Monday, September 15 from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m in the lobby of the GVSU Cook-DeVos Center for Health Sciences. Join the Dean of the Kirkhof College of Nursing, Cynthia McCurren to recognize KCON faculty and staff retirees, and also welcome newcomers to the college. The event is complimentary and includes adult beverages and light appetizers.
