Young Alumni Award recipient: Ryan Slusarzyk, '08

Ryan Slusarzyk, '08 is the 2014 recipient of the GVSU Young Alumni Award. He graduated in 2008 with a degree in Marketing and Sales and Management. His natural leadership skills and university support are why Slusarzyk received this award.

Not only is Slusarzyk the Vice President of the Seidman College of Business Alumni Association Board, but he was also named one of the "40 under 40" by the Grand Rapids Business Journal in 2010. He is currently the Global Project Manager for the Amway Corporation.

The Young Alumni Award was presented at the December 6, 2014 commencement.

Seattle alumni club event at The Alibi Room - January 14

Join Seattle Alumni Club leader Eric Maino, '05 as he hosts a networking reception with alumna Alexis Alt, '09 and Assistant Director of Alumni Relations Alexis Rangel, '10 at The Alibi Room. The event will take place on January 14 from 6:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. PST. Come mingle with with Lakers in the Seattle area and get updated on the latest Grand Valley news. The cost is $15 and includes heavy appetizers and two drink tickets.

Head to Scotty's Brewhouse for an Indianapolis alumni reception - February 5

Join Indianapolis club leaders AJ Colley, '07 and Marisa Kwiatkowski, '05 as they welcome Chris Barbee, '88 of GVSU Alumni Relations to the Indianapolis Alumni Reception at Scotty's Brewhouse. Enjoy an evening of networking with Lakers of the Indianapolis area on February 5 from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. The cost is $10 per person and includes hors d'oeuvres and one complimentary drink ticket.

Physical therapy alumni reunion at the RAM in Indianapolis - February 6

Save the date! Physical Therapy alumni attending the CSM 2015 Conference in Indianapolis are invited to gather with fellow alumni, GVSU PT faculty members and current students to renew old acquaintances, network and hear the latest on the PT program. The event will be held on Friday, February 6 from 8:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. at the Ram Restaurant in downtown Indy.

Nashville Alumni Reception - February 19

It's time to round up the Nashville area alumni once again for a Laker gathering. Join hosts Jenny, '04 & Joe, '07 Lashuay as they welcome Abigayle Sloan, '07 of Alumni Relations and Leah Rosenblum of Annual Giving for a reception at the Blackstone Restaurant & Brewery in mid-town Nashville. Your hosts will tell you about the latest news at Grand Valley State University and you will have a chance to win some Laker swag! 
The cost is $15 and includes heavy appetizers and two drink tickets. Free parking is included!

GVSU alumni at the Detroit Red Wings game - March 6

Head to the Joe on Friday, March 6 for an alumni outing for the ages! Watch the Red Wings take on the Calgary Flames at 7:30 p.m. in the company of fellow Lakers. This event is presented by the GVSU Metro Detroit and Lansing Alumni Clubs. The cost is $44 per person and includes your ticket to the game and a voucher for a hot dog and soda. The Red Wings will donate a portion of each ticket sold to GVSU.

Pull out those sneakers, because it's time to start training for the 38th annual Fifth Third River Bank Run. The race will take place on May 9, 2015 in downtown Grand Rapids, and the Grand Valley team will be in full force for the 3rd year in a row! Keep your eyes peeled for information to join the Laker for a Lifetime team.

Men's basketball continues to lead the GVSU Varsity Challenge

The GVSU Varsity Challenge is almost halfway completed. There is still time to make a gift before the end of the 2014 year! Help pull your team in the lead to win $1,000 for future athletic needs. The challenge will end June 30, 2015.

Here are the top 5 teams in the challenge:

Swimming & Diving Chapter kickoff - January 10

Join GVSU swimming and diving alumni as they officially kick-off their new alumni chapter on January 10. The celebration will start with the GVSU vs. Wayne State swim meet at 1:00 p.m. and will be followed by a reception at the Alumni House. The cost is $10 per person and includes admission to the swim meet and heavy hors d'oeuvres and beverages at the reception.

Celebrating Women in Sport & Physical Activity Day - Save the date

On Saturday, February 21, the annual Celebration of Women in Sport & Physical Activity will take place on the Allendale campus. Come celebrate the accomplishments of alumnae who took part in sport and physical activities during their tenures at GVSU. The cost is $25 per person and includes a reception and tickets to the women's basketball game. The reception is from 4:00 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. at the Alumni House with the basketball game to follow at 6:00 p.m. in the Fieldhouse.

The reception supports the Boand and Rowe Endowment for Advancement of Women in Sports and Physical Activity.
