Laker Volunteers Needed at the Largest 25K Road Race in the Country

Support the Laker for a Lifetime Team while helping out at the largest 25K road race in the country. More than 50,000 runners, walkers, spectators and volunteers will be a part of the Fifth Third River Bank Run on May 11. Volunteer opportunities for the Laker for a Lifetime events include: team gear check, spirit station along the course, post-race party, set-up and take down. You'll be in the middle of all the action at the Pew Campus in downtown Grand Rapids. Volunteers who register by May 3 will receive a t-shirt and one free entry into the post-race party. Alumni Spotlight: Monica Zsolt, '08

As a senior in high school, Monica Zsolt, ’08 couldn’t wait to study at GVSU under the direction of clarinet music professor Dr. Arthur Campbell, the April 2013 Outstanding Educator Award . She was so confident that she would thrive in the program that she didn’t even audition at other universities.

This same confidence is what got her through an aggressive sinus surgery, a challenging rehabilitation process, and all the way to a performance at Carnegie Hall.

Alumni Golf Outing Registration Now Open - Limited Space!

Registration for the 2013 Sleep Inn & Suites Alumni Golf Outing is open and ready for your team! Join dozens of GVSU alumni, family, and friends for this 18-hole scramble on July 20, 2013 at the Meadows Golf Course. Snacks and refreshments will be provided throughout the day, but save room for the post-game BBQ dinner!

The practice green and driving range are available during registration from 12:00 to 1:15 p.m. and the scramble begins at 1:30 p.m. with a shotgun start.

Chicago Club Alumni Reception at Chief O'Neill's - May 30 

Metro Chicago Alumni Club leaders Lisa Davis, '06, Rachel Vanderwiel, '09, and Brian Dutkiewicz, '02 invite all alumni in the area to Chief O'Neill's Pub & Restaurant on May 30, 2013 to enjoy food, drink, and play a round of cornhole in the outdoor garden. Hear about current GVSU projects that are going on across the lake in Allendale while connecting with Lakers in the Windy City.

Tigers Game in Tampa - June 29

Join Tampa area alumni and alumni club leader Brandon Avery, '05 for a night at the ballpark Tropicana Field. The Tigers will take on the Tampa Bay Rays on June 29 and all area alumni, family, and friends are invited to attend. A pregame gathering will be held at Ferg’s Sports Bar and Grill from 5:30-6:45pm.

GVSU Alumni Association Adopts a Highway

The GVSU Alumni Association is taking out the trash.... literally! The group has recently adopted a 2 mile stretch of highway in West Michigan on I-96 near the Eastmanville exit. Volunteers will be needed to assist with trash pick up three separate times throughout the year. Bring your friends and family and help keep West Michigan looking beautiful. The first volunteer opportunity is July 13

Every May we celebrate our newest alumni as they cross the stage and become Lakers for a Lifetime. And each year we reach out to our Anniversary Year Alumni who are celebrating their 10th, 25th or 40th anniversaries of graduating from Grand Valley State University.

If you’re an anniversary year alumnus from the classes of 2003, 1988 or 1973, please don’t forget to take advantage of the several ways to give back and connect with your alma mater this year. April's Headlines and Highlights

The GVSU Track and Field Team made history at the Al Owens Classic this April. Senior Sam Lockhart broke the discuss record with a 58.75 meter (192'9") throw. Freshman Darien Thornton put his name in the GVSU record books with a 62.13 meter (203'10") hammer throw. Sophmore Trent Chappell matched the high jump record by clearing a height of 2.15 meters (7'0.5")

Continuing Education Available for Healthcare Professionals

The Veterans Traumatic Brain Injury Education Project, supported by the Office of the Vice Provost for Health at GVSU, is offering a new continuing education program for healthcare professionals. This program provides comprehensive, evidence-based, military-relevant courses on treating service members with traumatic brain injuries to optimize outcomes for mental health resiliency and community reintegration. 

The online and on-demand courses include Physiological/Symptom Control and Interdisciplinary Care Team, Cognitive and Behavioral Health, and Case Management and Community Reintegration.

Each course offers an interdisciplinary discussion board for interaction with other health professionals. For more information, including registration fees and course materials, visit or email
