A Message from the Dean

Aloha Thompson School ‘Ohana,

I hope the back-to-school season has been going well for you all! It is heartwarming to see our students and faculty together in the classrooms and hallways. We have many wonderful events and activities coming up this month both in Zoom and in person. Please join us for these, including the Thompson School Open House on Friday, September 30, 2022 from 3-5 pm.

September is Sucide Prevention month. Mental health is an area of great importance to the training, research, and service of our school. Here are some important events shared by Dr. Jeanelle Sugimoto Matsuda who leads a muti-year youth suicide prevention grant with interdisciplinary partners. This is one of the many impressive, collaborative works in our school to support and improve mental health and wellbeing.

While it’s great to be back in person, I do miss everyone’s pets on zoom! Some pet pictures are below from our students and faculty. Feel free to send your own to deants@hawaii.edu to give us all a smile. For the next 4 months, we will continue to present student essay contest winners to show our connections. This month it will be Casey Metrose from the OPHS BAPH program.

Best,

Thompson School Essay Contest:
Casey Metrose

I am open to helping in any opportunity that life sends me. I find happiness through bettering the lives of others and regardless of what I do, I know I will always make a difference no matter where I am placed. It wasn’t because of covid, it was because I embraced change that my life got significantly healthier."

Publications: Social Work Speaks

The new edition of Social Work Speaks: National Association of Social Workers Policy Statements 2021-2023 (12th edition) has been adopted and revised by the NASW Delegate Assembly in 2020. Social Work Speaks is a comprehensive and unabridged collection of policies. The policy statements set the parameters for NASW’s positions and actions on a broad range of public policy and professional issues. Social Work Speakers can be purchased from NASW Press in both books and ebooks format.

This edition includes updated policy statements on a wide range of topics, including rural social work, voter rights and participation, mental health, hospice care, juvenile justice, foster care and adoption, and the rights of indigenous peoples. Former social work faculty, NASW-HI Board Director, Dr. Lana Ka'opua, along with other indigenous social work scholars, have contributed to the development of policy statement “Sovereignty, Rights, and the Well-Being of Indigenous Peoples Living in the United States." Kaopua said this policy statement was developed with coordination and leadership from the NASW-HI Chapter and involved the participation of Indigenous social workers from  Alaska, the North American continent, Guahan and other US territories, and COFA nations.
