Prison Wings

A concert to raise funds and awareness for art in prisons led by Homer singer-songwriter Shawn Zuke. The evening includes a sound healing performance featuring didgereedu, Solfegio Frequencies, Earth Drum, chants, flute and conscious music with Shawn and supporting musicians Sabrina Lee and Kelly Jay. Zuke, who organized the event and gathered the artwork, shares her songs and experiences of going into Folsom prison to share her music and promote art-making there. The event also features original artwork for sale from prisoners in Seward and California to raise money to purchase art supplies for them and other prisoners.

Encaustic Work-Play Days
Every Sunday in September, 12 - 4 pm
at Ann-Margret's studio in Homer

Join artist Ann-Margret Wimmerstedt for these Sunday sessions exploring the versatility of encaustic medium. Ann-Margret has been teaching encaustic workshops in Homer for 10 years and brings a wealth of information, enthusiasm and experience to her classes. Participants are encouraged to bring objects and images for inclusion. Space is limited. Call Ann-Margret's studio at 235-1575 to register. A $75 materials fee per session covers all supplies including pigments, encaustic medium, and panels.

Moments of Time, a photography exhibit
Friday, September 7, 5 to 7, with an artists talk at 6 pm

Homer photographer Alan Parks features images of his children, Hoxie and Ella. Parks writes, "Time, place , a memory in my mind... I can retrace the exact steps I took while making these photographs, it is almost surreal, but its not. It is clear and true, forever etched in the pages of my mind. The photographs are my artifacts."

907 Central Jazz Tour with the Dan Mac Quartet

This six-city tour of Alaska features one of Portland's best "jazzers," guitarist and luthier Mike Doolin, along with bassist extraordinaire Milo Matthews, Dan McElrath on keys and Cameron Cartland on drums performing original music from Doolin's CD "Reflection," Matthew's CD "Miles of Eva" and Dan McElrath's "Ajazzka" as well as many all new tunes on the new 907 Central CD to be released immediately following the tour.

A reading by Homer poets Eva Saulitis, Erin Coughlin Hollowell and Wendy Erd. This celebration of Eva Saulitus’s new book of poetry,
Many Ways To Say It, written in relationship to the “difficult, extreme, wild landscape of Alaska” provides the perfect opportunity to introduce a unique new state wide project,
Poems in Place. The evening will weave visual images, poetry, and acoustic music by guitarist David Grimes. A book signing will follow a time for audience questions. Refreshments will be served.

This Anchorage, Alaska based folk duo is the musical vehicle of singer-songwriter Michael Howard and classically trained pianist Heather Stewart. Howard has recently returned from a three month solo tour through Canada and the Pacific Northwest with his 2012 album, entitled "The Caribou and the Wolf". The Westchester Collective has appeared on stages around Alaska and at folk festivals, performing a range of traditional to modern folk and acoustic pieces, as well as original music. The group is currently working its first album, to be released in early 2013.

Cliff Eberhardt in concert

Singer songwriter Cliff Eberhart returns to Homer for a solo show featuring his original brand of American blues and roadhouse ballads. Cliff will be in Alaska performing with Dar Williams (Anchorage and Palmer) in September and he will be at Bunnell on Sept. 26 at 7:30 pm. He last played the Mariner with Richie Havens. Of note, until June 10, Cliff is in residence in Washington, DC as he has been hired by the Folger Shakespeare Theatre to write and perform original music for their production of The Taming of the Shrew. The show, set in the American west of the mid-1800s, has a Helen Hayes award winning director, Aaron Posner, and both the show, and Cliff, have already been getting a lot of positive press. Cliff has been playing to sold out crowds prior to his engagement with the Folger in DC.

Street Painting

Old Town People's Garden is a project of Old Town Neighborhood Association which envisions improvements for pedestrian safety, traffic calming and aesthetic enhancements in Old Town. The project commences with a street painting event beginning September 10 from 3-6 pm. Bunnell Street Arts Center leads these improvement efforts with grant support from Homer Soil and Water and Rasmuson Foundation. The intersections of Main & Bunnell as well as Bunnell & Beluga will each be embellished with a vibrant painting on the road surface as show above. For more information call Brianna 299-7403.
