UN Experts Urge Stringent Rules to Stop Net Zero Greenwash

Making net-zero pledges is easy without real accountability. This is what a team of UN climate experts was concerned during COP27. Companies have been rushing to make carbon neutrality promises for publicity's sake but at the same time lobbying for less climate change policy. The conclusion is, pledges sincerely made should provide detailed, feasible, and rigorous plans to reach their net-zero targets; while companies have to stay transparent so that the public can hold them accountable when targets aren't met.

What has the food sector continually overlooked when it comes to discussions around climate change? A 2021 analysis by Our World in Data showed that even if fossil fuel emissions magically disappeared, emissions from just the food sector would take the world beyond 1.5 degrees Celsius of warming, the aspirational target set as part of the 2015 Paris agreement. Simply put, there is no way of tackling the climate crisis without fundamentally overhauling the world’s food systems.
