Around The Parish back, semichromatically!
Sure, anyone can publish in black and white, and plenty of publishers can easily publish in full color, flooding your eye with hues on every square inch, but it takes the devil-may-care attitude of a renegade publisher to bring you partial color in this day and age... and yet, that's just what we at About Comics are doing with our latest release, a reprint of 1955's Around The Parish
Around the Parish
collects 78 single-panel cartoons from The Advocate
- no, not the popular gay bi-monthly. This The Advocate,
a publication of the Archdiocese of Newark, NJ, would eventually change its name to The Catholic Advocate
before finally coming to an end just last year. The "Around the Parish" cartoons took a gentle look at all the members of the local Catholic community – the men of the cloth, the parishioners, the kids in the CYO (Catholic Youth Organization) – from an insider view. The series was conceived by Advocate
editor Floyd Anderson. While the feature would run until 1962 in varying art hands, most of the early installments collected here were drawn by National Cartoonist Society award winner Frank Evers, with the rest by Hugh Devine. And most of them appear in black and white... except for eight which are highlighted by spot color use of red and green.
"I had bowed out of publishing more books of Catholic cartoons," explained Nat Gertler, publisher of About Comics. "After all, we published about two dozen such books already, to very little attention. Then I stumbled on a copy of this rarity. It was obviously a small print-run item originally – the version put out by Faith Publications in 1955 used a comb binding, which is a something that can be done cheaply, avoiding expensive equipment. It has all this lovely Frank Evers artwork, and we'd already reprinted his Father, Dear Father
and Jeremiah the Friar
. We'd even reprinted Hugh Devine's earlier work, All Angels Parish
. So I couldn't resist saving this one from being forgotten... and keeping the partial color."
The foreword to the book is by the Very Rev. Msgr. John J. Kiley. The Monsignor was the founding editor and publisher of The Atlantic
, and stayed on its editorial board until 1977.
