SALTWATER WALDORF SCHOOL
 - March Newsletter

Hello Saltwater Families and Community!

The school is very busy this month and spring break is just around the corner - please note the break begins March 30 with students returning April 12.

This past February, the Saltwater Waldorf School Board held a visioning workshop to look at the 2015-16 school year. Parents, staff and board all came together to discuss topics like the transition to middle school and communication at our school. The event was very interesting and if you would like a copy of the comments - click here for details.

Our teachers are very busy with their spring planning for the term. With only 13 weeks of school left, your children can look forward to trips to the beach, farm field trips and bike rides for our Grades Outdoor Pursuits program. Teachers are always looking for help driving to these field trips - if you can please sign up to help!

The Class 3-4 has started their field trips out to farms and have had a chance to do some gardening work at Jonathon Schut and Emma Hutchinson's home, work with the Alpacas at Morrison Creek Alpaca Farm and will soon visit Shamrock Farms and Good Earth Farms.

Class 5-6 raised $365 at the bake sale. They also held a very successful Spaghetti Fundraiser - stay tuned for fundraising tally. Thank you to community, parents and students for supporting these events. This money will be used to help fund the Class 5-6 trip to the Greek Games.

UPCOMING EVENTS...

Greek Games Update: This year our 5-6 class will be participating in the Greek Games, a pentathlon event including running, long jump, wrestling, discus and javelin.  This annual event hosts about 150 students from Waldorf schools across BC and Alberta and is currently held at Camp Squeah, a beautiful location near Hope, BC.  Class 5-6 is currently preparing both athletically and with fundraising, and in mid-May, along with teachers and parent volunteers will head to this 3.5 day event.

Parent Evening: We are very excited to tell you about the Parent Evening coming up March 23 at 7:30. Ruth Kerr will be here to talk about how 'Waldorf Education Prepares you for Life' at the Early Childhood Building.

Growing Smiles Fundraiser: The Saltwater Waldorf School spring fundraiser will be happening just before we leave on spring break. You will receive an order form from your class teacher. Please help us through this fundraising venture - the Growing Smiles campaign will kickback 40% of the profits to our school. Order forms are due back May 1.

Family Fun Days:  The School Early Childhood and Kindergarten Faculty have organized Family Fun Days happening every second Friday in March 13 and 27. This is a free, drop-in event for children up to school age from 9:30 to 11:30. Click here for more details.

Spring Puppet Shows:  The Saltwater Early Childhood teachers will be putting on two puppet shows at the Courtenay Library on March 19th from 3:30 to 4:00 pm. Please pass this along to anyone you know!

WASHER/DRYER FUNDRAISER IN THE EARLY CHILDHOOD BUILDING

The Saltwater Waldorf School has a goal to raise $1000 through our Smile Card program. At no cost to you (other than the normal cost of your groceries), you can help us achieve our fundraising goals. All that is required is that you collect a Smile Card from the office and use it to purchase your groceries when you shop at Thrifty Foods. The Smile Card program will kickback 5% of all Saltwater family and community purchases to the Saltwater Waldorf School. When you are unloading your groceries ask the cashier to pre-load money onto your Smile Card. Then pay with your Smile Card as though you would normally with debit or mastercard. Thank you for your support!
