Farewell to Julie Spero, MSPH after 8 years service to North Carolina

This week, we wish farewell to Julie Spero, MSPH, who is leaving her position as the Director of the North Carolina Health Professions Data System (HPDS). For the past 8 years, Julie has led and expanded the reach of our data and research, connecting it with pressing health workforce issues facing the state.

She strengthened the program’s relationships with state health policy makers and has worked with multiple professions to ensure that objective, timely and policy-relevant data were in the hands of those who needed them, when they needed them. She never failed to provide accurate numbers and clear descriptions of trends accompanied by well-thought-out interpretations. Her research has focused on the social accountability of health professional education, access to oral health care, the racial and ethnic diversity of NC’s health professionals, and the use of health workforce data for evidence-based decision-making. Julie led the transition from an annual paper-format Databook to an online, interactive website. She has also mentored many students working with our team during their graduate and undergraduate training. We are grateful to Julie for all that she has done for the program and the Sheps Center.  We will miss her!
