Celebrate People in Your PTA!
While it may seem a bit weird to keep conducting PTA business with school being virtual, make sure you are still recognizing and celebrating your volunteers! WSPTA has a formal volunteer award recognition program allowing local PTAs to award honors for outstanding educator, advocate, student advocate, and volunteer (Golden Acorn), as well as the honorary life membership award. Ask for submissions via your social media or electronic newsletter. You can even create a survey form for people to complete to nominate folks using tools like GoogleForms or SurveyMonkey. You can order your WSPTA awards online.

Similar to how you celebrate outstanding service in your PTA community, Northshore Council also celebrates amazing people. Please help us and nominate someone who you feel has made a difference!  Award nominations are due by May 1, 2020To nominate, you can either fill out the online nomination form or email Jane Chiodo.
2020 Washington State PTA Convention - 5/11-21
Save the date for the 2020 WSPTA Convention and training event that will be held virtually, May 11-21, 2020. Registration is $60 and participants will be able to access all professional development webinars, materials, prerecorded videos, keynote speakers, and general sessions-- making it an incredible value and opportunity for expanding your PTA knowledge! For all of the details, including registration information and a full schedule of events, visit the WSPTA website.
Weekly Online Roundtable - Tuesdays at Noon
Join us every Tuesday at 12:00pm (noon) through June 16th, for continuing online discussion about PTAs and Coronavirus: How to Deal. We want to bring Northshore PTA leaders together to share ideas and innovations, ask questions and voice concerns, and work together to find ways to better serve our school communities (and beyond!) through the COVID-19 crisis. Let's support each other!

Tip of the Week
What about our PTA mail?
With the closure of school buildings, all district mail (including any PTA mail going to schools) is now centralized at Support Services. If your PTA uses its school address and is expecting important mail, the current recommendation is to contact your building prinicpal to see if they can coordinate a time for you to pick-up your PTA mail.

Northshore Council PTSA recommends that local PTAs get a post office box (PO Box). This not only limits disruption in mail delivery for your PTA, but it also honors Northshore School District Administrative Procedure 4210P which states: "School support organizations located in school buildings cannot use the school address for correspondence. A separate address and phone number are necessary for all activities." In addition to adding a line item to your PTA budget for the PO Box expense, be sure to submit change of address forms to relevant entities (e.g., bank, WA Secretary of State, IRS, and WSPTA). It is also recommended to amend your standing rules to note which officer(s) hold(s) the post office box key(s) for clarity and to help facilitate transitions from year-to-year.
PTA Proud
Wonderful work continues to be done by our Northshore PTAs!
  • Woodin PTA continues to run its Families Helping Families Food Pantry during this time, open every Thursday 10:45am-11:30am at the school's main office entrance (they take donations at that time as well). They are taking every precaution for the safety of volunteers, families who use the service, and donors.
  • As its school transitions away from traditional K-5 use, Bear Creek PTA is shutting down at the end of this school year. But they continue to work to support their school community and beyond, voting at their last meeting to donate all funds in their Unanticipated Programs/Project budget line to two local foods banks during this unprecedented time. Also-- if you are needing an escape, be sure to check out the amazing Virtual Family Vacations to Alaska, San Diego, Hawaii, New Mexico, and Florida they hosted during spring break!
  • In an effort to help offset the isolation many students are feeling during this time, Fernwood PTSA hosted some virtual playdates in April. Parent volunteers hosted supervised Zoom meetings for each grade level and facilitated fun activities for the kids.
Is your PTA doing something that makes you #PTAProud? Or have you seen or heard about PTA activities in Northshore that inspire or deserve recognition? We would love to hear about it! Please contact Melissa Kline or Cindy Jensen with your program, story, or event!
Council Kudos!
  • We continue to be grateful to those who participate in our weekly online roundtable discussions, helping to make them a meaningful resource for PTA leaders across our district!
  • MANY THANKS to Cindy Jensen and Melissa Kline, who continue to reach out and offer support to our  elementary and secondary PTAs!

April is Child Abuse Prevention Month

April is Child Abuse Prevention Month School closures and social distancing efforts in response to COVID-19 have limited mandatory reporters’ access to children and youth, making it harder to detect abuse or neglect and leaving many children at risk.
