The best time of year
The last few weeks have been full of pure joy as kids around Metro Atlanta skipped back to school and settled into their classrooms. As a student, and later as an educator, this time of year has always been my favorite. The mix of sharpened pencils, bright bulletin boards, and brand new "back to school" clothes brings an immediate smile to my face.
But this year was a bit different because alongside my joy was an equally strong sense of fear. This year my baby boy started kindergarten. Though he did have cute “back to school” clothes, and a new class with bright, beautiful bulletin boards, only one thought stayed on my mind: Please let him have great teachers.
I imagine my wish is the wish of all parents who send their little ones to school each day. We know that children who enter a classroom where they are loved, challenged, supported, and nurtured are set up for success not only for that year, but for their lives. Watching my little one walk away from me and into his new school was a profound reminder of the importance of AFAEE's work. We must keep great teachers in the classroom.
AFAEE is continuing it’s 14th year by searching for the 2019 cohort of Atlanta Families’ Awards winners. We know that by identifying, empowering and expanding the impact of excellent educators, we increase teacher retention and student achievement. The teachers and leaders that earn our prestigious award continue to impact generations of students with their gifts and talents, year after year. We are overjoyed to share that over 96% of our previous winners are still impacting education, or completed a full career dedicated to the city’s children.
As we welcome back our little (and big) ones to school, let’s also remember to recognize the outstanding educators that stand with them each and every day. If you know of a dynamic teacher or school leader in Metro Atlanta, please nominate them for the 2019 AFAEE cohort by clicking here. And if you have an extra few minutes, sending them a note of thanks would be pretty great, too.
Have a wonderful year, everyone!
