We wrapped up summer with a fabulous Barbecue (more about that below), but the seasons keep rolling on. Now we’re heading back to school and into autumn. We hope you enjoy a video of one tenant family doing both the fun day and heading back to school. This is the first of a series of tenant videos we will be producing with the help of award winning director and editor, Catherine Brabec throughout the fall. Stay tuned for more!
Back to School
For children who have experienced homelessness, the start of the school year brings special challenges. Back-to-school shopping with limited means can add stress to an already-fraught transition. Children who don’t have a safe place to go home to can struggle to focus in class and may not have a quiet place to do homework. They may have to change schools when their family relocates, making it hard to make friends and establish long-term relationships with peers and teachers.
Sometimes Back-to-school season is a family affair. Veteran Stephanie Merriweather (profiled above) recently completed her Associate's degree and is looking towards a Bachelor’s degree. Her educational success shows she is getting back on her feet after homelessness. Back-to-school jitters also give her something in common with her two sons,Joshua and Josiah , who received these spiffy new backpacks you see below from Marble Collegiate Church to start their school year. The support from our generous donors make it possible for more families to turn the page on homelessness and look towards a new start with squeaky-clean new backpacks to go with their high hopes for a new year of learning.
We are proud to say that stable permanent housing such as ours enables children to thrive. Our child tenants know that they will be returning home tonight to a familiar place, and their parents also have the stability to focus on their children. In our many years of offering permanent housing for women who need it, we have seen that taking “where to sleep” off The List of things is not only a relief, but enables parents to spend energy on their families. Case managers help parents find other supports and navigate the resources available to them to help them and their children succeed. Happy back-to-school season, everyone, and thank you!
It’s here, standing tall
We are pleased to announce that our new site, Linwood Park Apartments, at 315 Linwood Avenue, is down to the final details. We are looking to be able to move tenants into the new facility, where HousingPlus will be providing supportive services to 30 units, in Spring 2020. She’s a beauty: just look at her standing tall!
Get your bag packed!
For over ten years we have had the support of Marble Collegiate Church. Yet again this year, Marbles’s gracious volunteers donated backpacks for all of the tenant children at HousingPlus and filled them with school supplies so our children could start school on the right foot. You can see them on Joshua and Josiah’s backs in the video above. We are honored and humbled by Marble Collegiate’s continued support again this year.

And finally, a smile for you...
We ended summer with what has become a beloved annual summer tradition at HousingPlus: the Tenant Services Family & Friends Fun Day. Close to on e hundred tenants, family, and staff joined in for games and cook-out food in the yard of 297 Essex Street. In addition to beautiful weather, attendees enjoyed a chance to socialize, catch up, and further build bonds with neighbors and members of the HousingPlus family. Not to mention, of course, face painting and a special visit from Minnie Mouse herself!
