The Dog Days of Summer are coming up!  Prepare to embrace these hot sultry days and get inspired by this most uncomfortable part of the summer!

“Dog Days” comes from the time of year when the Dog Star rises the same time as the sun sets. The Dog Star, also known as Sirius, is the brightest star in the constellation Canis Major (the Big Dog).

So, let’s adopt Greek and Roman astrology and blame the heat, drought, lethargy, fever, mad dogs and bad luck on the stars! The stars can take it and keep shining brightly!

Fresno Music Academy Website
For the month of August, Fresno Music Academy and Arts is pleased to welcome artist Caleb Henderson, for an installation of his figure drawings on the brick wall of the Doris Gallery. The exhibition includes works created outside of his usual art making practice, including drawings made while trying out new media, during community drawing events, and while working alongside his students in the drawing studio classroom. These bonus drawing opportunities allow Henderson to “swim in new waters,” and work without a particular goal in mind. Sometimes these drawings elicit a new idea or technique to be pursued in other works, but for the most part the drawings are the unique response to a particular time and place.
At community drawing events (like Drink and Draw hosted by Fulton 55, now ended), community members pool resources to draw from a model. For Henderson, this kind of event provides a drawing play-time, and the space to try something new. In the drawing studio, as the semester passes, Henderson often draws while his students work on ten-minute or longer poses. These in-class drawing sessions provide a similar opportunity for exploration outside of current projects. Seeing him work outside of demonstrations, his students ask some of their best questions looking on at how he approaches the pose and makes progress in a drawing.
The exhibition brings works from the studio to the gallery, providing an inspiring look at Henderson’s process and varied approach to the figure and use of media. The exhibition includes work on paper using a variety of media, including a lot more color than one might expect for figure drawings, reflected in the selection of drawing media and papers.
Join us Thursday from 5:00-8:00 pm with live music in the ViSTA Theatre starting at 6:00 pm. The work is also accessible Monday through Saturday during business hours.

Jeffrey Scott Gallery presents BEHOLD: FRESNO, an artistic look at Downtown Fresno's thriving past and a glimpse of what our future downtown has to offer.

Hints of the past:
John Rupe is a master builder, creating mini replicas of historic downtown buildings out of cardboard and other found materials. His work will be displayed throughout Jeffrey Scott Gallery, complimenting the photos displayed on the walls provided by Chris Rocha, of Vintage Fresno. These photos are from a recently acquired catalog of original negatives from the Fresno Bee’s archives, circa, 1930 – and with the help of Horn Photo, these photos live for the first time in several decades for your viewing.

Looking towards the future:
Become a part of the Future of Fresno! Downtown Fresno Partnership will be revealing the finalists for the “Create Here” Business Plan Competition and will be seeking public feedback on what types of businesses you would like to see come downtown.
Jeffrey Scott Gallery will also be hosting a beer-based pop-up! Incinerati Brewing Company will be serving beer brewed at the Downtown Fresno Brewery Incubator – a space set up for breweries start-up on a small scale, enabling them to brew and sell beer while saving up funds to eventually move on to a standalone brewery/taproom.

Friday Photography Live/Artist Reception: Friday, August 16th, 2019, 6:00 to 8:00 PM.
The Spectrum Art Gallery Exhibition Committee is proud to present this selection of non-member artists to share the gallery exhibition space in August 2019.  Each committee member was able to extend an invitation to a guest for this show, and we think you will be stunned by the talent we have to present! A little information about each of the artist follows:
Rachel Clark
Rachel Clark lives in Fresno with her husband, Alex. She was born and raised in the San Joaquin Valley, just south of Fresno. At the tender age of nine, she developed a love for the study of North American birds. As she grew older, it morphed into an all-consuming passion. she earned a degree in Animal Ecology from Iowa State University, and today Rachel works as a wildlife biologist, but her primary aspiration is to work as a bird guide in the Sierra Nevada Mountains, and the surrounding areas.
Michael Frank
Michael Frank is an internationally exhibited and award-winning Digital Artist working in the Central Valley of California. Using computer technology and software as his primary medium, he details intensely intricate and imaginary environments that are equally realistic and alien. Themes of Nature and manufactured reality abound in landscapes both surreal and comforting. Mr Frank is a 30 year veteran of Advertising and Industrial Photography disciplines, and currently serves as a managing Board Director for the Sorensen Studio and Galleries.
Al Golub
Al Golub has been a working photographer for almost six decades. He began his professional photojournalism career in the United States Air Force at The Valley Bomber. He then worked for The Modesto Bee for forty years during which he won countless awards and eventually became the Director of Photography. He currently photographs for Cal Fire, Yosemite National Park, Yosemite Conservancy, the San Francisco 49ers and Oakland Raiders, and covers cattle drives, rodeos, wild land fires, and more for his own pleasure.
Randy Haron
Randy Haron, best known in Fresno for being the owner and operator of Haron Jaguar Land Rover, but he is also an accomplished photographer. His unique style of Landscaped and Aerial  photographer is recognized all over the world. His work has been used by The LA Times, New York Post, CNN, ABC, NBC, CBS, Fresno Bee. He has also worked with such brands as REI, Travel & Leisure, Frommers, Oakley, Canon, and Maverick Helicopters.
David Hunter

David Hunter is a former photojournalist turned landscape and nature photographer that moonlights during the day as an elementary school teacher.  David has been the Artist-in-Residence at Bighorn National Recreation Area and Craters of the Moon National Monument and Preserve.  He has photographed projects for several other National Parks as well including Yosemite, Sequoia, and Great Basin.  David has also done contract work for the Bureau of Land Management and the California Department of Fish and Wildlife documenting endangered and threatened species.
Cathy McCrery-Cordle

Cathy McCrery-Cordle lives in the Western Sierra Foothills with her husband and two children.  When her children were young, Cathy began noticing details in nature like blossoms on fruit trees and the way water beaded across leaves after it rained.  She began photographing these subjects, and experienced a growing sense of excitement and curiosity in photography.
In 2008, she purchased her first digital camera and began photographing flowers, dew drops, frosted leaves, etc.  She was often drawn to the smallest details in nature that she found so beautiful and her passion for photographing nature took off.
James Ramirez

James Ramirez is a central valley native from the agricultural town of Kingsburg. Always an aspiring creative, it wasn’t until 2011 that James discovered his love of photography. Self learned through research, trial and error, James has committed fully to a creative way of living, pushing the lines of imagination through his imagery.
Ronald Webb
Ronald Webb embarked on his photographic journey while teaching life science and physical science classes on the Micronesian Island of Kwajalein in 1977. By 1980, he was a full-time photography teacher at Clovis High School in Clovis, California. Over the years, he got the opportunity to learn more about the art and craft of photographu from such notable master photographers as Ted Orland, Morley Bayer, Oliver Gagliani, Al Weber, Robert Dawson, Ray McSavaney, and even had a wonderful learning encounter with Ansel Adams himself.
