Anne Whitehurst

Show Dates: September 5 – October 26

Art Hop: Sept 5 & Oct 3, 5-8PM

Artist Reception: Sept 14, 3-7

Multi-genre Artist Anne Whitehurst has been working on her Veritas Series since the mid-1970s, when she realized that writing backwards gave her instant access to her right brain. The evolution of this body of work will be evident as she displays pieces from the seventies progressing through every decade since.

Words are the compositional content of this body of work, written backwards and without editing the content. The artist’s ride through her right brain is rhythmic and flowing, punctuated by her signature neon palette. Wit and mystery flavor the curious titles, intriguing people to read the work, back to the wall, with the provided mirrors. The collection becomes an installation with the viewer as the voyeuristic performer.

Use of metallic paint and ambient lighting bring different trains of thought to the surface of these multi-level compositions.

Anne will fill the gallery and her own studio at 1821 with forty-plus years of this series.
Come and experience this consciousness-altering exhibit.

ROBERT KATSUSUKE OGATA
Robert Ogata is a Fresno Educator, studio artist and former ceramist. He graduated from Fresno State, studying painting with Darwin Musselman and ceramics with Adolph Odorfer. He continued post-graduate studies in ceramics with classes, workshops, and residencies with American potters John Glick, Peter Voulkos, Byron Temple, and Warren McKenzie. In the 1970ʼs Robert spent six weeks with English Potter, Michael Cardew at the Big Creek Pottery in California and continued that association with Cardew again for a week in Colorado.
In the 1980ʼs Robert participated in two six week residencies at the Idylwild School of Music and Art, building an Anagama kiln (Traditional wood-fired) with Paul Chaleff and the following year producing and firing his work in the kiln while working with (National Treasure of Shigaraki, Japan) Shiro Otani. Many of these wood-fired pieces were first shown in a one-man show at the Fresno Metropolitan Museum and at a 60 year retrospective at the Fresno Art Museum. Some of these pieces are included in this exhibition. Robert retired from teaching in 1997 and finding it impossible to continue to make wood-fired pots in Fresno he stopped making ceramics, acquired a studio, and decided to focus solely on his career as a painter.
He has exhibited his paintings in New York, Los Angeles, Scottsdale, Arizona, St. Helena, and the Bay Area and is currently represented by the SFMOMA Artists Gallery in San Francisco.
The items in this exhibit are on loan from the Ogata Family

For the month of September, the installation of figure drawings from artist Caleb Henderson continues. The exhibition includes works created outside of his usual art making practice, including drawings made while trying out new media, during community drawing events, and while working alongside his students in the drawing studio classroom. These bonus drawing opportunities allow Henderson to “swim in new waters,” and work without a particular goal in mind. Sometimes these drawings elicit a new idea or technique to be pursued in other works, but for the most part the drawings are the unique response to a particular time and place.

At community drawing events (like Drink and Draw hosted by Fulton 55, now ended), community members pool resources to draw from a model. For Henderson, this kind of event provides a drawing play-time, and the space to try something new. In the drawing studio, as the semester passes, Henderson will draw from the ten-minute and longer poses, while his students draw. These in-class drawing sessions provide a similar opportunity for exploration outside of current projects. He also finds that his students ask some of their best questions looking on at how he approaches the pose and makes progress in a drawing.

The exhibition brings works from the studio to the gallery, providing an inspiring look at Henderson’s process and varied approach to the figure and use of media. The exhibition includes work on paper using a variety of media, including a lot more color than one might expect for figure drawings, reflected in the selection of drawing media and papers.

Join us Thursday for Art Hop from 5:00-8:00 pm with live music in the ViSTA Theatre starting at 6:00 pm. The work is also accessible Monday through Saturday during business hours.
