Masked Identities:
We are programmed to recognize other humans by several factors: their voice, their scent, their body, and most of all their face. So many billions of humans on the face of the earth, all with the same combination of eyes, nose, mouth, lips; yet, the slightest variations in size of any of these features creates a different identity. A familiar face in a room filled with strangers may create feelings of warmth, and a sense of security. Likewise, we might experience loneliness, even depression, when surrounded by hordes of strange faces. What occurs within our minds when another’s face is covered by a mask? How do we then identify with the subject when we cannot look into a set of eyes?—eyes that may reveal a friend or foe.
Once freed from the tethers of recognizing another human, we are granted liberty from preconceptions, our imagination is allowed free reign to wander, to even fantasize in a sort of mental bacchanalia at the multiplicities of possibilities. As you ponder each of the photographs Patrick has created—stripped down subjects, without human faces, without garments of identity--open your mind to alternate identities.
