BUSINESS

  • The U.S. government is expected to release their initial snapshot of the 2014 economy with their estimate of how much the economy grew in the final quarter. Economists expect GDP growth to have been an annualized 3.2%, which while healthy, lags third quarter's reading of an annualized 5%. Here are five things to watch out for in the U.S. GDP report: Wall Street Journal

  • Shake Shack, the New York-style hamburger and milkshake restaurant chain (and the bane of New Year's resolutions everywhere), begins trading today on the New York Stock Exchange under the ticker SHAK. The company's initial public offering priced at $21 a share, above its upwardly revised indicative range of $17 to $19. Ah Shake Shack, showing numbers greater than one expects on the stock exchange and on the bathroom scale. MarketWatch

POLITICS

  • The U.S. Senate passed the Keystone XL pipeline bill with a 62-36 vote, fulfilling a promise that Republicans had made to tackle the controversial pipeline as their first order of business in the new Congress. The bill will now undergo final revisions before being presented to President Obama, who has repeatedly said he will veto the bill (Republicans need to muster 67 votes to overcome the veto).  The Guardian

SPORTS

  • [Football] It's the New England Patriots vs. the Seattle Seahawks in the Super Bowl at 6:30pm ET on NBC. The game also features Katy Perry as the halftime performance and a boatload of commercials.

  • [Tennis] Novak Djokovic and Stan Wawrinka face off today to determine who will play Andy Murray in the men's final of the Australian Open on Sunday. The Djokovic and Wawrinka match is dubbed "Showdown III" due to the two players' history of epic five-set matches against each other in the 2013 and 2014 Australian Opens (still not as epic as that time Djokovic played an Abrams tank in tennis). On Saturday, Serena Williams will face Maria Sharapova in the women's final.

  • [Basketball] The reserves for the Eastern Conference and Western Conference All-Star team were announced last night:

Eastern Conference reserves Al Horford, Paul Millsap, Jeff Teague, Chris Bosh, Dwayne Wade, Kyrie Irving, and Jimmy Butler
Western Conference reserves Kevin Durant, Russell Westbrook, Damian Lillard, James Harden, Klay Thompson, Tim Duncan, and Chris Paul

CULTURE

  • Dartmouth College's fraternity/sorority and party scene, made infamous as the inspiration for the film Animal House, is about get a lot more tame as the college's president announced a campus-wide ban on hard liquor starting March 30. The ban is in response to "a spate of student misbehavior that has tarnished the reputation" of the school. Something tells me that the next two months are going to be a pretty, pretty wild... Gawker
