Dear Friend,

We’re pleased to share this year’s annual progress report with you.

2016 has been an important year for B612 and for the field of planetary defense, as we continue to be at the forefront of efforts to prevent large asteroid impacts. It’s been rewarding to reflect on our growth over the last several years. We hope you enjoy reading about our progress.

As you’ll read in the report, the Asteroid Decision Analysis Machine - or ADAM - is gaining momentum both within our donor community and with scientific and technology partners. In a nutshell, through ADAM, we will provide the analytical tools needed to help world leaders, scientists, and the planetary defense community interpret and manage the unprecedented flood of asteroid discoveries expected within the decade as a result of new observational platforms. This project will provide theoretical analysis to understand asteroid deflection scenarios as well as tools to analyze specific asteroid threat cases.

Our synthetic tracking technology research also continues to show promise. Thus far, we’ve shown that synthetic tracking is a viable technique to increase the sensitivity of telescopes searching for dim, fast-moving asteroids by digitally “de-smudging” their images. In the coming year, we plan to employ this technique to analyze data transmitted back from an existing space telescope in Earth orbit.

In public education news, our activities this year included the 2nd annual Asteroid Day on June 30th, which was an international success. Through this effort, the scientific community across the globe came together to share research and educate the public.

We hope you read the report, and we look forward to working with you in the coming year to continue our research efforts, technology development, and public education activities which will enable us to achieve our goal of protecting Earth from asteroid impacts.

To our future,

Ed Lu, CEO
