RAW Science: Saving Earth from Asteroid Strikes

RAW Science sent a team to video astronauts Rusty Schweickart and Ed Lu at a recent private event in Silicon Valley. Check out this new video that candidly discusses protecting the Earth from asteroid strikes and our plan to design and build Sentinel, our infrared space telescope to launch in the mid-2010s.  Watch the video.

Predicting What Sentinel Will Do

Dr. Marc Buie is B612′s Mission Scientist. He has worked with world-class telescopes around the globe, from small portable telescopes in remote locations to large space based telescopes, including the Hubble Space Telescope at the Space Telescope Science Institute. In this essay, he gives an introduction to the Sentinel Operations and Data Architecture working group. Your donations make his work possible. Read more here.

Ed Lu's Ask Me Anything on Reddit

From favorite movies (Galaxy Quest) to how he became an astronaut, Ed Lu participated in Reddit's popular Ask Me Anything forum. The Reddit community turned up to ask lots of questions of Ed, and you can read the conversations in the archive.

Mashable: The Hunt for Killer Asteroids

"There are millions of them out there. To find all of them, how we’re currently operating, would take thousands of years. But most asteroids change orbits slightly every 100 years — so at that pace, we’re never actually caught up. An asteroid that we think is safe now, then, might be a threat for our great-great-great-grandkids." – Edward Lu, B612 Foundation. Find out more.

Kids Support Sentinel, Too

From selling Astropops to sending personal letters, kids are learning about the Sentinel mission through educational programs (like Ed Lu's ScienceCast at the Perot Museum of Nature & Science) to television specials like NOVA's recent episode. And they want to learn more and help out. Treat your science-loving boys & girls to a "Don't Be a Dinosaur" tee from the B612 Store
