Welcome to GracePoint Church, where we are committed to helping you take your next step toward better knowing and serving a holy God of grace and truth.
The Apostle Paul was a sports fan. How else can we explain all his passionate declarations about living out our faith in Christ, using vivid illustrations from the world of sporting competitions? He hints at sports like running, boxing and wrestling, and uses themes like training, obedience, self-control, effort, goals and focus that help believers remember to find great joy in the effort of serving our Lord.
Listen to these “cheers” from Paul: “Train yourself for godliness” (I Timothy 4:7), “compete according to the rules” (2 Timothy 2:5), “exercise self-control in all things” (1 Corinthians 9:25), “do not box as one beating the air” (1 Corinthians 9:26) and, “strain forward to what lies ahead” (Philippians 3:14).
I declare these “cheers of encouragement” from God’s Word, because I hear so many people (sometimes from my own mouth!) expressing their weariness of this long season of changes and challenges that this pandemic and these tumultuous times have brought us.
Perhaps we should sit down with God’s Word and review the entire passage from which these cheers are taken.
May God give us as believers the same spiritual joy of preparation and perseverance in our faith that physical athletes find in their preparation and competitions. Make it part of your daily prayer that our Lord would give you joy in the challenging course on which He has found you worthy to run. This will bring glory to our Almighty God of grace and truth.
From a Shepherd’s Heart,
Pastor Perry Kallis
