REACH LEADERSHIP CONVENTION
Focuses on
Habits of Mission-Driven Churches

“We want to be a mission-driven church! And now we have the tools to do it!” said one pastor who participated in the REACH Leadership Conference at Camp Hope, BC, May 17-22.

Paul Brantley, North America Division (NAD) Vice-President for Statistics and Research, and the REACH Advisory of the Seventh-Day Adventist Church in Canada (SDACC), led by Daniel Stojanovic, Vice-President for Administration, focused on training leaders to be strategic in their planning so as to fulfil the great mission of the church.

The REACH Advisory is made up of representatives from across Canada and exists to equip conference and union leaders, especially pastors, to equip their members to be more strategic in reaching their community with the Christ-centered message of hope and wholeness. REACH is an acronym for the five ministry values of that drive the mission - Revival & Transformation, Education for Discipleship, Alignment within the Church, Community Outreach and Evangelism, Healthy Leadership and Management.

The first three days of the conference were dedicated to interactive presentations, leadership exercises, small-group dialogue and on-the-job training about the ten habits of mission-driven churches. During the Sabbath morning and afternoon - the third day - 16 of these leaders visited 10 churches within Vancouver Metro, Fraser Valley and Kelowna areas to share the excitement of being a mission-driven church.

The next two days were dedicated to empowering 21 BC pastors to lead a church focused in its mission. Vancouver Hispanic pastor, Kelbur Mazur, was inspired by Paul Brantley’s book, Becoming A Mission Driven Church: a Five-step Strategy for Moving Your Church From Ordinary to Exceptional. Kelbur appreciated learning about the advantage of using three words in our mission statement: Christ-Centered, Hope, and Wholeness. These words are the keywords that give direction to every member of this Division to prepare for the soon coming of Jesus.

Pastor Mazur said, “One of the churches that I am pastoring already started to see the benefits of a church focused on its mission. Through the REACH action plan, we were able to coin a mission statement that guides our activities and initiatives along the year. We already see the benefits - church attendance has increased approximately 50% since last year, and the number is growing!

After this meeting with the REACH Advisory, I shared the ideas of strategic planning with our church leaders. They became very eager to expand their knowledge on how to move from an ordinary to exceptional congregation. It’s evident that this process takes time, but surely, with the guidance of God we can and will do mighty things for His glory, by focusing in a Christ-centered message of hope and wholeness.

Normand Cote, pastor of Cornerstone Church in Coquitlam, asks, “Is your church growing? Does your church have direction? Does it have goals that are measured?” Pastor Cote was inspired to “start having a mission-driven church with vibrant ministries all going in one direction.” He wants a church that “reveals God’s character and self-evaluates each department – a church where we measure ourselves, in order to know if we are winning or losing.

Greg Wellman, pastor of Penticton and Cawston- Keremeos, was inspired to say, “We often wonder why people leave the church, or young people don’t stay. But perhaps the church needs to recover its high calling, its mission and privilege to honor God by doing excellence in all they do.” Pastor Wellman added, I was deeply moved by the Ellen White quote, ‘If Christians were to act in concert, moving forward as one, under the direction of one Power, for the accomplishment of one purpose, they would move the world’ (9 Testimonies, 221). As our Strategic Planning workbook says,  “What an awesome thought! Your church gives glory to God (Revelation 14:7) when it accurately represents Him in the way it operates. Becoming a mission-driven church is both a great privilege and weighty responsibility!”

RUTLAND SDA CHURCH
Bringing "Hope and Wholeness" to Mexico

The Rutland SDA Church has been helping the poor and disadvantaged in Mexico for the last 5 years through the ministry of Thomas and Marcie Drobott. Each January, the Drobotts leave for Mexico to operate a Maranatha-built Adventist school called named Colegio Empalme. In the five years since the Rutland SDA Church drew up an agency agreement with the school, the school grew from a K-6 school with 58 children to a K-9 school with 92 children, including orphans and street children.

Cameron Koronko, pastor of the Rutland Church, said, “Each year at a Vespers Service the Drobotts give us an inspiring report about what the Lord is doing in the school. This is certainly a project worthy of support.” Recently, the Drobotts reported 19 baptisms. In the spirit of Alignment Within the Church, John and Mariam Peters from the Duncan SDA Church have teamed up with the Drobotts to bring hope and wholeness the children of Colegio Empalme.

Thanks to Jessica Marola and David and Melanie Kartik, of Creekside Community Church, you can see their ministry at www.helpmexico.org. Come and see the Drobotts in one of the conference ministry tents at our 2018 Camp Meeting.
