Celebrating Baptisms

Sophie Sabot, Baptism, Abbotsford SDA Church, June 15, 2019
Sophie was born in Senegal, West Africa to missionary parents, Pastor Luc and Anita Sabot. Her father, was also born in Africa to missionary parents! She has witnessed many baptisms, in her lifetime, some even in her own backyard. It was when she witnessed her older sister, Nicole being baptized by her grandfather, Pastor Claude Sabot at BC Campmeeting that she first expressed her desire to be baptized as well. She was only 6 years old at that time, and her parents advised her to wait till she was a bit older. Two years later, she witnessed her older brother, Jeremy being baptized by her grandfather, again at Camp Hope and again she expressed an even stronger desire to be baptized. Around this time, she began a series of Bible study lessons from Amazing Facts and was guided through the lessons by her brother. After another recent series of Bible studies with her father, her parents felt that she had matured spiritually, and the time was right for her baptism. Sophie took the plunge on Sabbath June 15, 2019 as a public testimony of how Jesus has already been working in her heart. She is a true follower of Jesus and has shown loving patience as she prepared and looked forward to this special occasion. Her baptism was also a very special blessing to her father, who was able to baptize her the day before Father’s Day.

James Alexo, Baptism, Abbotsford SDA Church, June 15, 2019

James Alexo has been going to the Abbotsford Seventh Day Adventist Church since he was eight years old. It all started in the home where his parents were a vessel and a leading example that Jesus can be your  Best Friend through anything, mentoring that relationship as he grew up.   He has taken part in many programs but especially one where we had the privilege of seeing James grow up in Pathfinders and start to find that relationship with Jesus for himself.  Pastor Grant Misseghers has mentored and studied him so now we are all so proud of James as he made that public decision for Jesus through baptism. This is a big year for James as he graduates from grade 12 from Abbotsford Senior Secondary School and  follows his dreams of becoming a Travel Nurse. He is also travelling to Oshkosh this year with the Fraserview Pathfinders as a staff member and leader and is going to receive this Master Guide. Where ever life takes you James,  know that your Best Friend Jesus will always be there and help you through anything. Let your light shine.

Pathfinder Leader

Jewell Alexo, Baptism, Abbotsford SDA Church, June 15, 2019
Jewell Alexo is James' younger sister also attends Abbotsford Secondary School completing grade 10. We have seen her faith grow and she loves to ask questions through her Pathfinder experience and Sabbath School. Pastor Grant Misseghers has mentored and challenged Jewell to really get to know her Saviour for herself.   It was a real privilege to see her take a stand for Jesus and that she did it with her brother James is very special. We are so proud of her and the young woman is becoming for Jesus. Jewell - Follow your dreams and let your light shine for Him.

The disciple Thomas is best known for doubting the report of Jesus’ resurrection, but few realize that, after he had received proof, he became an ardent missionary for his Lord.
While Paul evangelized the Mediterranean area, Thomas went East, to bring the Gospel to the Jews living in Kerala, India. The converts, known as Nasrani, or St. Thomas Christians, were well respected.

Rohan and Preetha Mathew were St. Thomas Christians who came to Canada to study physiotherapy. While in Ontario, they met Adventists, and after moving to Penticton, attended the Penticton SDA church where they actively participated. Even their young son, Prehan, took an active role. When forest fires raged in BC, Prehan, together with his friend Jayden, operated a lemonade stand to raise money for ADRA’s fire relief efforts. Both boys also helped with a project to feed and provide clothes and hygiene products to the homeless.

There were tears of joy when this precious family was baptized on June 8 and officially became members of the Penticton SDA church. Preetha’s mother was there from India to witness this special event.

The Greatest in God's Kingdom

It started as a simple conversation at a fast food outlet. The customer mentioned that he was going to the Philippines to meet a girl he had corresponded with, but was nervous about going by himself. The cashier said that a group from her church would be going, and that he could possibly go with them.

Attending the meetings held by the SDA group from the Okanagan, both Marc Paizen and his friend Jonalyn were baptized and married not long afterwards. They have been faithfully attending the Penticton SDA church ever since, and their children, Markie and Venus, were dedicated there.

Marc also shared his new-found beliefs with his brothers, and Nathan and his wife Weyrica are also regular attendees and active participants. On June 8 their newborn Jeremiah, brother to Samuel, was also dedicated to God.

What a blessing it is to see these little children presented to their Lord.

OAKRIDGE Adventist Church
Sounds That Changed Lives

Being a doctor, a teacher, a pastor or firefighter is no longer just a dream, but a reality that seems closer every day for the children who are part of theAfrican Children's Choir49who performed Monday, May 20 at Oakridge Adventist Church.

The 17 children, aged 7-10attracted the attention of about 100 attendees who, with joy and positive astonishment, enjoyed a presentation full of colors, dance, and traditional hymns mixed with African sounds. This event was part of their"Just as I Am" tour which had several presentations across the Great Vancouver as a result of the partnership between MusicFor Life Institute (MFL), Oakridge Adventist Church (OAC) and St John’s Vancouver Anglican Church (SJV)that supported this group with accommodation, meals, and entertainment, among other things.

The African Children’s Choir has been an important and successful MFL project since it provides education and care to the most vulnerable children in African countries such as Uganda, Kenya, Rwanda, Sudan, Nigeria, Ghana, and South Africa. To date this initiative that has directly impacted the lives of nearly 52,000 childrenby partnering with local churches offering concerts to enrich ministerial outreach in exchange for awareness and financial support.

These kids not only shared their voices but also their impressive stories of lives that at an early age have been changed giving them the chance to become leaders in their own countrieswho can then help thousands more.
OAC’s volunteer participation was essential not only providing support during the concert but also serving meals during the four days this group stayed at the church. They dedicated their time to share with the children, adult chaperones and crew and even gave presents to the kids to keep OAC in their memories.

The Children’s Choir Tour Coordinator had contacted 60 Vancouver churches trying to find a host group for the gap in their tour schedule. She was puzzled when the only two churches to respond had the same address: 5350 Baillie Street! Coincidently it was the Oakridge Adventist Church pastor and a leader from their tenant church.  Everyone agreed this was a divine appointment and agreed to work together on hosting the choir.
