Our New Piano!

This Sunday, you may notice a surprise in front of the lectern. What is the story behind this beautiful gift to our parish?

A longtime resident of Watsonville and colleague of Nicki's, Ellen Rose Khayat was a passionate supporter of all things musical in Santa Cruz County: she taught piano students of all ages, was on the board of the local chapter of the MTAC, her students regularly competed in scholarship competitions, she herself was a member of Celebrate Piano Ensemble (Nicki's piano ensemble group), and she was a longtime patron of the Santa Cruz Symphony.

After she passed away in 2019, her family started a search for new homes for Ellen's two grand pianos, a Steinway and a Mason & Hamlin. The family's hope was that their new owners would get as much enjoyment from playing them as Ellen did. After much talk and deliberation, they decided to donate the Steinway to the downtown branch of the public library to use for the Munching with Mozart lunchtime concert series. We are the lucky recipients of the Mason & Hamlin! The Khayat family only asks that we create a brass plaque to attach to the piano to memorialize her.

What an incredibly generous gift to us, and what a beautiful way to remember someone who has given so much to the musical youth of our county. We are so grateful for the Khayat family, and for Nicki who arranged for the piano's arrival.

Be sure to join us in worship on Sunday to hear our beautiful new piano.

Blessings, Pastor Katheryn

Joint Coffee Hour

The joint coffee hour was a wonderful time with an attendance of 48 people. A highlight of the event was Nicki Kerns leading the choir (Kathleen Eschen-Pipes, Vickie Rutan, Laura Zucker, Kathy Willott, and Diana Dean) in a sublime rendition of "How Great Thou Art" sung in Korean. Many thanks to those who provided the eats: barbecued chicken wings by Ellen Bauerle, cookies by Gwen May, sandwiches by Larry and Lorraine Vilardo, and the green salad by Pete Halper. Thanks to Marta Narus and Jolynn Carrington Khoury for the lovely table decorations and the Mays for the use of their tablecloths. Thanks as well to Tim and Mayre Vincent for their help setting up, cleaning up, and for the use of their lovely cake knife and server. Big shout-out to Sejin Oh who helped in many ways: working with the choir, taking photos, and all around lending a hand. Thanks to Pastor Katheryn for her leadership in contacting and communicating with Pastor Joshua Kang and the Korean Central Presbyterian Church. Finally, thanks to Ed Sams for all his work orchestrating this special event.

Moving Day!
