HAPPY NEW YEAR!
Friends,

You probably made, or are getting ready to make, New Year’s resolutions, solemn promises to yourselves to improve in 2018. How many of us make these annual promises to ourselves and then don’t seem able to keep them?  Don’t be ashamed to raise your hand! We are all in the same boat. We are human beings, after all.

The history of God’s Chosen People in the Old Testament shows how incapable they were of keeping God’s Commandments.  Sure, they loved God and kept His laws sometimes. At other times, they were just plain evil.

The story of God’s Chosen People is our story. They – and we – needed rescuing from our sins. We need the Spirit of Christ to dwell within us and write a new law, the very nature of Jesus Himself, into our hearts and minds.

The New Testament reading from the Book of Galatians is perfect timing as we begin a new year.  Paul strongly criticizes the teachings of false believers who were telling new Christians in Galatia that they must have faith in Jesus and follow the Law of Moses. Paul tells the Galatians that the law was meant to be temporary until the promised Messiah came to save us from our sins. Jesus was sent to free us from the laws, Paul says. This is not to say that the Ten Commandments no longer apply to us! Paul warns us that, although we are free, we are not to use our freedom to indulge in sin.

Let’s do something different this year. Rather than focusing on how we will change our behavior through New Year’s resolutions, let us set out to grow closer to Jesus in 2018.  There are many ways to draw closer to Him.

One powerful way to draw closer to Jesus is to constantly give thanks to God for everything. In 1 Thessalonians 5:18, God tells us to give thanks in all circumstances, for this is His will in Christ Jesus. Why would God have us give thanks to Him in all circumstances? He is our Abba, our Father, and we are his beloved adopted children. He wants all good things for us! He knows that giving thanks to Him in all circumstances leads to a joyful renewal of the mind. Giving thanks to Him is the best antidote to hopelessness.

Have a Blessed New Year!
