Almighty God, you know that we have no power in ourselves to help ourselves: Keep us both outwardly in our bodies and inwardly in our souls, that we may be defended from all adversities which may happen to the body, and from all evil thoughts which may assault and hurt the soul; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

CHURCH OF THE GOOD SHEPHERD
Revealing Christ's Love:
Caring for the sheep
Searching for the lost
Dear Church of Christ,

That we live in an age of convenience is undeniable. If you’re anything like me, you use a handheld device as an alarm clock, a shopping tool, a GPS, an instrument of communication (audio and visual!), and many other things; not to mention other conveniences such as air conditioning and escalators. On the  one hand, our modern conveniences can be very beneficial. They allow us to communicate with friends and family around the world. They efficiently get us to where we need to go. They keep us cool in Florida summers. Thank you, Jesus, for AC!

But on the other hand, being inundated with conveniences can shape our lives in powerful ways that are not so helpful—even destructive. Let me explain. If we get accustomed to always taking the easy path, we will be less inclined to see the value of struggle and perseverance—things that shape our character. This issue is particularly important for disciples of Jesus who are called to an inconvenient way of life—that is, forgiving enemies, putting others before ourselves, and walking in accordance with God’s commands.

When God gave his people the ten commandments he wasn’t simply trying to make life hard on them. He was showing them a way of life that would create an orderly and holy society in which his presence could dwell. While God’s law would sometimes seem inconvenient (especially in situations of temptation!), the Israelites actually believed his law was pure and beautiful and life-giving—just read Psalm 19! They knew that in following God’s commands, they would be shaped into the people God desired them to be—a people holy like he is holy (Leviticus 19:2).

St. Paul reminds us that the Jesus way of life is often inconvenient. In fact, it is foolishness in the world’s eyes (1 Cor. 1:18). Taking up his cross was not a convenient thing to do, but in his suffering, Jesus learned the true obedience of a child of his Father (Hebrews 5:8-9). And his example was set forth for us so that we too can embrace a life of self-denial. Such a life will often feel very inconvenient! Swallowing my pride and forgiving someone is inconvenient. Biting my tongue when I want to retaliate is inconvenient. Showing mercy to someone from a different political party than mine is inconvenient. Stopping to help out a person in need is inconvenient. But it is in these “inconvenient” ways that we learn the way of the cross and become “conformed to the image of his Son” (Romans 8:29).

This Lent, let’s challenge ourselves to ask where choosing the more inconvenient path might make us more like Jesus. And in making those choices, we’ll become less dependent on the things of this world and more dependent on Him. As the old hymn says:

Turn your eyes upon Jesus
Look full in his wonderful face
And the things of earth will grow strangely dim
In the light of his glory and grace.

In His Name,

Fr. Cameron+

A PRESENTATION ON THE GENESIS OF THE CHURCH OF THE GOOD SHEPHERD
by Jim Sutton
"This … is for all for whom Christ died.  This Church will be a free Church – no ranks, no titles here; for the poorest man on earth may find here his Saviour’s home.  I trust that the open door and ready welcome of this dear Church will speak, as only such a Church can speak, to wanderers’ ears, and many such will come to hear, and stay to pray, and go hence as men went from Jesus, every whit made whole." The Rt. Rev. Henry Benjamin Whipple
or you'll be late for church!!!!
SUNDAY, MARCH 11
The next opportunity for the celebration of the Sacrament of Holy Baptism is on Easter morning at the Easter Sunrise Service. Please let Rev'd Sarah or Fr. Cameron know if you or a loved one would like to be baptized.
MAGNIFY THE LIVING LORD - VOLUME 8

"Witnessing for the Lord can be as simple as relaying to someone who is experiencing a problem how God helped you with a problem of your own.  Even if you fumble with the words, by sharing that incident God will be able to use your witness to encourage that person to come to Him.  It is up to you to ask God to provide you with such opportunities." (Paraphrased from Forward Day by Day)

Writing for Magnify the Living Lord – Vol. 8 may be such an opportunity for you. Previous volumes can be found online HERE

Please email your stories to Joy Sutton HERE  If you would rather just tell about a happening instead, please phone the Parish Office with your contact information and Joy will call you back and will write it for you.
