Almighty and everlasting God, whose will it is to restore all things in your well-beloved Son, the King of kings and Lord of lords: Mercifully grant that the peoples of the earth, divided and enslaved by sin, may be freed and brought together under his most gracious rule; who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

CHURCH OF THE GOOD SHEPHERD
Revealing Christ's Love:
Caring for the sheep
Searching for the lost
"When the Son of Man comes in his glory, and all the angels with him, he will sit on his glorious throne ... and he will separate the people one from another as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats." Matthew 25:31, 32

Dearly Beloved in Christ,

Jesus is already King and his authority already extends "far above all rule and authority and power and dominion, and above every name that is names, not only in the age but also in the age to come." (Eph. 1:20-23)  At the end of the age he will return at which time everyone will acknowledge his Lordship for then, willingly or unwillingly, every knee shall bow and every tongue confess Jesus as Lord and King.

Contrary to the attempts by Madison Avenue and Hollywood to persuade us to the contrary there are two possible outcomes to our present life: death or the Lord's return. And Jesus wants to make sure that his followers are fully prepared for both. His return will be sudden, without warning, and we are to be prepared for that time by being responsible (Matt 24:45-51), ready (Matt 25:1-13), and productive (Matt 25:14-30).

On his return we will be held accountable for our discipleship, not because we sought any gain or merit thereby, but because we have allowed the Holy Spirit to do the work of transformation in our lives so that we have become more Christ like by caring for the stranger, the poor, the prisoner, the sick, the hungry and the thirsty. For insofar as we look after the least of these in Jesus' family who are in need then, Jesus tells us, we have done so for him. St Martin of Tours knew this truth when, after giving half his military cloak to a shivering, half naked beggar he received a vision of Jesus wearing that half a cloak in the presence of his angels.

May we, like the sheep in today's Gospel reading, be always prepared for our King's return so that we might also hear "come, you that are blessed by my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world."

In the love, peace and grace of Christ,
Revd Sarah+
