O God, who before the passion of your only-begotten Son revealed his glory upon the holy mountain: Grant to us that we, beholding by faith the light of his countenance, may be strengthened to bear our cross, and be changed into his likeness from glory to glory; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

CHURCH OF THE GOOD SHEPHERD
Revealing Christ's Love:
Caring for the sheep
Searching for the lost
Dear Church,

We've all heard or read the Transfiguration passage a thousand times. If you're like me, you still can't figure out exactly why Jesus takes Peter, James, and John up on the mountain. They get an insider's glimpse of his glory, and they get to see old Moses and Elijah as well! Even Peter is confused about what's going on. He offers to make shade tents for the three luminous figures--a kind enough gesture, but one that's telling of his confusion.

The key is in the context. If you back up just a little bit in Mark's Gospel, it says, "Then Jesus began to teach them that the Son of Man must undergo great suffering, and be rejected by the elders, the chief priests, and the scribes, and be killed, and after three days rise again" (8:31). The Transfiguration occurs shortly after, signaling that the event is somehow linked to the suffering and death of Jesus. How can that be? Isn't the Transfiguration all about his beauty and glory?

Well...yes! He's revealing his kingdom glory, but he will go on to show them that the reason he has such glory is because he lays down his life for the world. It is on a different mountain, the hill of Calvary where his glory will most fully shine, though hidden beneath his bruised and bloodied body.

For Jesus, glory is the destination of those who give up their lives for the sake of God's Kingdom. As we move toward Lent, this reminder should urge us to take stock of our lives. In what ways are we living for ourselves, and in what way is God calling us to the glory of self-giving love?

In Christ,

Fr. Cameron+

MAGNIFY THE LIVING LORD - VOLUME 8

"Witnessing for the Lord can be as simple as relaying to someone who is experiencing a problem how God helped you with a problem of your own.  Even if you fumble with the words, by sharing that incident God will be able to use your witness to encourage that person to come to Him.  It is up to you to ask God to provide you with such opportunities." (Paraphrased from Forward Day by Day)

Writing for Magnify the Living Lord – Vol. 8 may be such an opportunity for you. Previous volumes can be found online HERE

Please email your stories to Joy Sutton HERE  If you would rather just tell about a happening instead, please phone the Parish Office with your contact information and Joy will call you back and will write it for you.
